I've always considered gig bags merely dust protectors with a handle. YMMV

I don't know why I'd ever use a gig bag... Fender Hardshell cases are so sweet looking. Especially my 60th Anniversary Case (It came with the guitar) :P

Funny that this is coming up on the Fender boards. My Strat is the one guitar that I feel comfortable with hauling around in a gig bag. Now, I use it just to go to work in the morning, take up to my office, back down again, then over to our rehearsal space in the back of my car so it's not like it's being shipped anywhere or thrown into the back of a truck.

Fender guitars are tough as nails and very stable which is one of the things I love about them. My Gibsons, on the other hand, I would never carry in a gig bag because the heel at the headstock is so fragile on those guitars. I do have a hard case for my Strat, but I love the soft case because it's light, easy to carry, and I can fit a few accessories into it.

On a side note, I have a Fender double guitar gig bag as I was carrying two guitars to practice for a while. That case is a real piece of junk and the seams started separating on it shortly after the one year warranty ran out. That's after using it as I described - once a week in the back seat of my guitar. If I decide to buy another gig bag, it'll be a Gator as I have one of those for my MIM Strat and it's much nicer quality and even has a cushion for where the heel of the neck sits and a hard piece of plastic embedded in the bottom for when you stand it up on end.

I never felt uncomfortable keeping my guitars in a gig bag but I do realize that if somebody tripped and fell on the gig bagged guitar that it would get seriously F'd up. My luthier also told me to stop bringing my guitars in the gig bag and use a hard shell case. Makes sense. It is an accident waiting to happen.

I'm so glad that most everyone seems to be onboard with the idea that gigbags suck. The serve a purpose yes but they are not the way to store or transport your guitar or bass on a regular basis.

Mine always travel in a hard case no exceptions.
