This is great, yesterday I found out from fenderforum.com that Best Buy is selling musical instruments. So, I orderd a American Standard Strat. black with a maple fretboard. When did Best Buy start selling Fender guitars?

I cant believe it! I just went to the sight, they have pretty much all the strats, I thought they'd just have the real cheap ones, but they have all the American Series, amps, everything. I dont know about buying one from them due to the fact nobody that works there probably knows anything about them i.e. setting them up properly, but its good for people who dont have access to music shops that sell Fender.[/i]

Yeah, we discussed this a little while ago. I go to Best Buy for strings because it is closer than my usual shop I like. The Best Buy I go to is ok. It has a lot of good equipment...just not very knowlegable people working (kids). That's ok, research on my part always saves me in the end.

I did have a bad experience there around the end of November. I went in to purchace a guitar for my daughter, got over looked several times. Couldn't get anyone to help me. I finally walked out when a man in a suit came in with his son and they poured the charm on them. I went back to my main shop.

Just about 2 weeks later I went there to ask them a guitar question (because no one else knew), the guys did not know right off hand...but they were more than willing to help me find the answer. Eventually we took a guitar off the wall (exact same model as mine) and figured it out.

I have mixed feelings about Best Buy. Hit or miss.

Hello Strat-brat,

There is a Best Buy across from where I work
I go there to test drive guitars they let me have
free reign. I'm sure they're ready to sell but
good spirited enough to let me have a bit of fun.

They gave me a free pick.

Cheers.

There is one by me as well. I prefer it to going into GC where I always here "you should dump that mim and get a real strat" to which I always reply "and what do you own... not play but own?"

Anyway... they have a few on sale, and their regular price is just as good as anywhere else. I have always gotten great help and input. And best of all... I can use my reward points to add to the 6 string corral!!!!!!

So I stopped by our local Best Buy last night for the first time since their Musical Instruments section opened. The only thought running through my mind while browsing around the mini-music section there was, "this is so weird." In fact, I said those exact words to two Best Buy employees. I was surpised to see top-of-the-line guitars from both Fender and Gibson hanging on the wall in a Best Buy. I pulled down a couple Statocasters and started giving them a look-see - nothing more than usual, but it seemed to frazzle the dude who was working in the section. He seemed to hover and asked me to let him know if I had any questions, all while mentioning, "I don't get a commission or anything." Heh... At any rate, the set-up condition of the guitars on the wall seemed to be similar to that of my local Guitar Center - pretty poor.

The only other thing I kept thinking is, 'has this shown to be a positive thing for Best Buy? Are people really buying expensive musical instruments from a Best Buy store?' Unfortunately for them, and oddly enough, the local indy music store that I shop at is right across the street from our Besy Buy. I'll continue to buy DVD's, occational CD's and the like from Best Buy - but my instrument money will be going to locally owned shop. I worry though, will the Best Buy music section impact the local store negatively? I sure hope not. Only time will tell, I suppose...

To me Having Best Buy sell Musical instruments is a mixed blessing, one it gives GC a run for it's money, but now you have Best Buy's Ethics to deal with, I have not shopped at Best Buy in years and do not plan on it, I will visit my Indy or even GC before shopping there.

Well, it "can" give the smaller stores competition.

A huge chain that buys 1000 Strats can get a discount from Fender since they're buying a huge amount.

A small store that buys 5, or just orders one here or there probably won't get the same bulk rate, and might not be able to knock their selling price down much because of that.

If best buy is having lower prices, what will happen is people will talk to the nice guy at the local store, try out his stuff and go where they save the most.

It's all about sales. You don't want to be friends with customers, you want them to buy from you. If you want to be friends, get on facebook or something. If you want to stay in business and pay bills, you need to sell - period.

It makes me worry about the Mom and Pop shops not so much because of the price but because they have the ability to have the stock on hand and ways to move and store it as needed.
