When I was a teen in the 60's a buddy who really believed I had a future in the biz gave me a Fender Concert amp just like this one. It was originally beige but someone had painted it black with a brush and some glossy enamel, and it was some kinda homely. (Apparently I wasn't the only one who didn't see the value of a vintage amp in original condition)

It had a brown face plate, brown knobs and 4- 10" speakers and it sounded great.

But, because it didn't have reverb I didn't appreciate it and I eventually let it slip away. (But, not before I let the same guy try to build separate cabinets for the head and left and right speaker pairs, and he cut the wood with a hand saw! None of the unpainted plywood edges were square and the joints didn't match, and it looked like ten miles of bad road! I feel so stoopid now. I mean it's like someone gave me The Mona Lisa and I let others paint a tat and an eye patch on her)

What I wouldn't give to have it back so I could restore it.

*sigh*

It's been a little over 40 years and I ask you all, have I suffered enough?

Or, should I be stripped of my strats and forced to wander the desert forever listening to The Scissor Sisters covering The Bee Gees?

Who cares? That was back then, long gone. That amp was the holy grail back then so much, not in the condition you received it in. Why would anyone - back then - go out of their way for just another amp.

Would be like someone today customizing a strat, when there are thousands all over, then "regretting" it 40 yrs from now.

You're fine. Get over it dude. Life's too short to whimper about normal decisions of the past.

"(W)himper"?

Ooh, that smarts! :)

Well, shortly after that ordeal I bought a new, silver face (CBS) Super Reverb.

Oh, sure, it was shiny and had reverb but that CONCERT sounded much better.

It had a really gritty overdrive tone that people pay a premium for now.

And, when I see the prices on the reissues (which have PCBs instead of point to point wiring, except for the ridiculously priced hand wired amps) I can't help but wish that I had more resources to draw on (like the internet) to explain those finer points to me back then. I was too young to go to DC and hear Danny Gatton with my older pals and I didn't know any real blues players and what the search was ultimately about.

I just used a FUZZ FACE for distortion because, well, that's what Jimi used.

We've all done some of that when we were younger. Forgive yourself, man! How were we to know ( you and I are likely the same age) that things would turn out like this? They were just amps! Just stupid old solid body guitars! Who knew that years from then, the quality of production amps and guitars would deteriorate so badly? Who knew that these old amps would appreciate because of that and just low numbers produced?

Teenaged kids in the 60's sure didn't, I'll tell you that!

We've all parted with things we never knew would be so valuable in later years.
I've sold more than one Fender guitar that I'd wished I'd kept, and I've sold even more old tube Fender amps. At least I kept many of them that I could actually use from time to time.

Life goes on

Weve all made stupid mistakes. I think they hone your mind into looking after your gear, when you realize what you've done.

I myself sold a orange marshall mercury combo for £20 in 1989. Very stupid indeed.

Tat and eyepatch on the mona lisa, did i chortle at that one.

We've all made mistakes. Acknowlege and move on.

Mine was about 10 years ago when I lent a friend my 1980 Lefty Rickenbacker bass. I miss that bass.

Or maybe it was when I lent MY BEST FRIEND my Lefty Ovation guitar...and he paid to have it changed to a righty. Just let that soak in for a second. Yes, he's still my best friend. No, I don't lend him guitars anymore.

Or, maybe...

Love,
Todd

Some of us have done stupid crap when we were younger. Let it go. You can never know the value of something 40 years ago. WHo knows, it might not even work now if you did hold on to it. How much would you have played on it w/o the reverb? As long as it took for you to buy an amp with reverb? That is how clutter accumulates around the house.

I used to jam at my drummers house, and his neighbor would come over to listen once in a while. One time, he brought over an old 1970's Fender Princeton amp, and would let me use it. I would plug my Les Paul Custom straight into it, put every knob( except bass) on 10, and it made the sweetest sound you can imagine. He wanted $100 for it, but because I couldn't use it to play gigs cuz it wasn't loud enough, I passed. I wished I hadn't passed on that one. Now they sell for a pretty penny. Oh well.....

On a similar note, I had a jazzmaster when I was in high school. Someone traded it for me. I thought it was cool, then hated it and completely chopped it up, painted it, etc. Now? I wish I would have known it was a cooler guitar than "some ugly Fender" I thought it was back then. But, you live and you learn. :)

And I've done FAR stupider things than that at various points in my life :)

I been married 30 years, should I regret that? I been married so long, I don't look both ways when I cross the street anymore. Don't be so hard on your self, we all did dumb things years ago, like taking baseball cards and a clothes pin and shredding them in your bicycle spokes, yea I wonder what those cards would be worth today?
