I was looking around the internet today and found an article saying that leather straps can damage the finish of the guitar over time. Is this true and if it is, what is the best way to modify a strap to prevent damage?

If your body has a ploy finish it will take a long time to damage the finish. If you have a nitro finish it will rub though some day. I have guitars that where made in the 80s with ploy and show no wear from the strap.
You arm rubbing the body could also do damage. I would not worry to much.

The Nitro finishes can get rubbed off fairly easily and also react poorly to some types of rubber (like that on guitar stands). The Poly finishes are pretty bullet proof though.

+1 on the Poly finish being bullet proof

It's hard to find a guitar stand that states it's safe for a nitro finish. I have a Gibson acoustic with a nitro finish and called Gibson and asked what to do and they told me to put SOCKS on my stands!! You would think someone would sell one that is safe for nitro. :?

Check out the Hercules stands Hop, I have Hercules stands, and wall hangers. They have a special finish on them, very sturdy too. Auto grab system means your axe will never fall out, safe as houses.

The " Ultimate Support " stand lets the guitar hang as if it was on a wall hanger. I use that for my new MIA Strat. But I cut a cheap polishing cloth to size and glued it to the part of the leather strap that rests on the guitar. Maybe that will stop the leather from rubbing the finish off.

Come on people, a leather strap help people get that relic look faster. BTW I own a 2 inch Levi leather strap and love the way it distributes the weight of my Stratocaster.
