I prefer Rosewood. I would like a Maple one in the future though.

My favorite neck is the Maple one on my '95 Am. Standard Tele. It just feels the best.

But of the 5 electric guitars I own: 2 are Maple, 2 are Rosewood, and 1 is Ebony (1981 BC Rich Mockingbird).

Love,
Todd

In the fretboard world which is more expensive in the making process? maple. rosewood or ebony? I hear only good things about ebony fretboards ... I will probably buy one of those jackson in the future just for kicks :)

On second thought I have been enjoying my maple Strat. over my rosewood Strat. lately. Sometimes I can't make up my mind. Glad I have both.

My first Strats all had rosewood fretboards, so that would have been my choice until I added a Surf Green Classic Series 50's Strat with a maple board. Now it's a toss up. :D

I have more guitars with rosewood only because they didn't offer some models with maple. I prefer maple because I think they're just easier to play, especially Blues with lots of bends. I know the conventional wisdom regarding tone is that maple is bright and rosewood warmer, but my old ears don't detect much difference.

Also, two of my absolute favorite guitarists, Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy, have maple fretboards on their sig models.

My MIM Strat has a maple neck and my Squier Strat has rosewood. I like the feel of maple better, but the sound of rosewood better. As far as looks go it depends. I think sunburst looks best with rosewood and white looks better with maple.

I have not formed a strong preference. I like both of my Fenders. The Stratocaster is rosewood and the Telecaster is maple.

Right now, I really like the maple neck on my three tone strat. Most here said they prefer rosewwod on that color, but for some reason, i prefer the look of maple fretboards on tele's and strats. Plus maple fretboards are still new to me, so I am still in the honeymoon stage.

To me, rosewood is better looking overall and wears much more gracefully, but just does not look right to me on a strat or tele.

My old Ventura rosewood fretboard is beautiful when freshly oiled. And if I play the rosewood necks regularly, the natural oils from my fingers keep it looking great. I do not like the look of a worn maple fretboard

For playability and tone, I have no preference based on the fretboard, but have preferences for playability and tone individual to the guitar depending on my mood and what I am playing.

Of my three guitars, I cannot tell you which one I like better. I love them all for different reasons equally.

The ESP is wonderful for thrashing out, and whammy bar stuff. Big fat round sound, even with the EMG 81's. The only thing I would like to change on this guitar is the 81 in the neck for a 85.

The Ventura MIJ gibson l6s copy is very special to me. It my first electric that my mother bought for me when I was 11 or 12 years old (37 now). It has a vintage vibe and some of the best action of any guitar I have ever played. The quality of some of these old MIJ copies was quite good for the price points these sold at in the day. No wonder Gibson sued. The EMG combination of the 85 and 81 make it by far my most versatile guitar too. It was about $160 back when mom bought it, and it will stand up well to my new strat and my ESP. It still has the Gibson mustache headstock, which generally dates these guitars pre-1977, or pre-lawsuit. At the time I wanted a copy of a Les Paul that looked like Jimmy Pages, but my teacher said this Ventura was the best guitar for that price point, and I am glad he convinced my mom to buy it instead.

The strat speaks for itself, I do not need to tell you guys the virtues of it. To me, its the clean tones that make it speacial. Quite a lively clean tone for a solid body guitar

Sorry for the long post, I love to talk guitars and amps

yeah I have a strat with a maple fretboard, but all my other guitars have rosewood (including the bass,) and one with ebony.

I prefer the Strat, naturally, to all the others, but I'm not sure how much of that to attribute to the maple fretboard and how much to the overall feel/sound of the strat compared to the others. How significant the differences are. Maybe someone with 2 strats very similar except the fretboard could tell me what they think about the differences in tone and feel? Are rosewood boards much more durable? I understand that's one of the main reasons fretboards were added to necks in the first place.
I guess theoretically when a maple board is completely worn out, the whole neck is toast, but you could change a rosewood fretboard, though i have never known anyone who has done so. Or even had to replace a neck because of wear, only from misadventure.

I put up this poll for opinions because I am currently in full GAS mode, and looking for a new guitar. I have several, but the last one I bought new was the strat, in 94. I was hoping for a few opinions with a , hopefully, a bit of reasoning as to the why's and wherefore's of your preferences, and again the members of this forum didn't disappoint.

Mainly this poll came about because i had nearly talked myself in to the Eric Johnson strat (maple,) when the store i frequent trotted out the equally sexy Jeff Beck signature model (Rosewood.)

Thanks for the insights. But I guess it always comes down to play it and see which one you like better.

All my Strats are maple. My acoustics are rosewood or ebony. My Gretsch is rosewood. I prefer the maple of my Strats but I might just buy another Strat with rosewood to see if I really care... Hmmm Gassin again...
