I would go for the American Std for the following reasons. I like the Fender strat tone, which the Highway 1 isn't really like due to the pickups (but if you want a more modern sound, there you go), I played a Highway 1 that had been setup properly, and it seemed to go out of tune allot more (the Americans never seem to). I like the smaller frets on the American Std and Am Dlx, I tend to squeeze chords, and the larger frets on the Highway 1 make that more difficult for me due to finger length. I personally dont like the big headstock. Last but not least, as I said in a previous post, gigbags are good for nothing but having a strap to carry on your back, they provide no protection to your guitar besides maybe some scratching. As you can read though, everything I stated besides the gigbag are all personal preference, and may not be yours. I would at some point like a strat with the Highway 1 finish, i believe it allows the guitar to breath, and with the right features and pickups will give it a better tone. But I will probabably buy a body off Ebay, i see them for a couple hundred. Plus the noisless pups on the American will be, well,,,,, quiet. The strat I'm playing now has Rio Grande tallboy Vintage, which do have a great tone, but I do miss not having the near silence. I spent a couple hours shielding and rewiring everything on it last weekend, and it is MUCH quieter, but not like noiseless. But noiseless is another point of preference, I'd gladly give it up for Texas Specials. Oh, one more thing, I didnt read all the postings,so it may have already been addressed, but the American Std doesnt have the S1 switching, that's on the American Deluxe, which I would choose over both the other two combined. Good luck

You think the Hwy 1 feels better as it is...or after getting it back from the Luthier?

I ask this because I tried two different ones at GC, and both felt like the frets were protruding about 1/16" off the edge of the fretboard on both sides. If not for that, I think it would be a fantastic feeling neck. Definitely a "C" shape that did'nt feel like a Louisville Slugger, but I'd still want to get clear laquer on the neck. I've always liked that on my strats, especially after it's been polished, it slides like wet glass.

well for my self i had to do nothing to it
but to put my gauge strings on it
