Hey guys, i just had a simple pickup question. I own a Fender Standard Strat (HSS) and want to replace the bridge pickup in it for something a little..... nicer. I was just wondering what pickup other ppl are using and their opinions on it. A pickup with a decent amount of sustain and crunch would be nice because i play a lot of rock and punk. I was looking into a Seymour Duncan Invader because I know that's what Tom Delonge used in his special edition Strat before Fender discontinued it. That or a DiMarzo X2N because i have heard a lot of good things about it as far as output and sustain. any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

Hi Flook,
What kind of pickup is in it now? Pearly Gates? It might help to answer your question, if you could describe what kind of tone you are getting now.
The SD Invader and the DiMarzio X2N are both ceramic magnet pickups. That means they are powerful and depending on your gain settings, ccan sustain for days with a healthy dose of overdrive. The thing about the ceramic magnets I'm not too fond of is that they are'nt as warm as the Alnico magnets. I have a DiMarzio Steve's Special that I took out of a John Petrucci set up because, the Air Norton that was with it had more body to it, and could sustain with or without overdive better than the SS. The SS was very bright, bright to the point of being brittle. I would only put that pickup in a very muddy sounding guitar.

all the pickups that are in it now are stock. i am looking for something that some might consider a little less... "warm". the overall plan for this guitar is to swap out just the bridge pickup with something so that i can get a very Punk or hard rock sound. my goal is to get the sound Tom Delonge got when he played with Blink-182, (that's why i suggested the Invader and X2N). thats where i think a ceramic magnet might be a good idea. I still plan to leave the middle and neck pickups stock so if i need a good warm sound i can use those. That and i also own a Standard Telecaster i can use to get that sound if worse comes to worse.

you can look at Seymour Duncan JB's or Gibson Dirty Finger pickups also. I know Tom uses the Dirty Fingers in his new signature

ya, i was also looking into that one as well. my only concern is that Tom uses the Dirty Fingers in a Hollow-bodied Gibson. that and the price tag.

The Seymour JB's have a warm tone to them, The Screamin'Demon pickups have more of a growl to them. Of course both of those may have a totally different character in the Strat-sized mini versions. I know the JB strat-bucker version is'nt as warm as the full sized humbucker.

DiMarzio Hot rails are some screamin pickups too.
