Okay, I know it's bad mo-jo to mention a Gibson/Epiphone thing on a Fender site but these are the ones I'm picking between!

Fender Deluxe Player's Strat

Pros:

Strats are used/were used by personal heroes such as Kurt Cobain, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Billy Corgan, Stone Gossard, David Gilmour, John Frusciante, John Lennon, Pete Townshend, and more.

Includes a tremolo arm.

Very nice finishes available (although this is towards the bottom of the priorities list).

Vintage noiseless pickups.

Button that activates the bridge pick-up in positions four and five of the five-way switch, giving a total of nine pick-up combinations.

Can be found cheaper.

Can be found with deluxe gig bag.

Great sustain.

Good tone.

Mid:

Has single coil pick-ups (can be seen as both a pro and a con).

Cons:

Poor factory strings (easily fixed, though).

I've heard about a case or two about fret buzz.

Also heard about the action being a little high.

ALSO heard about the distortion tones being poor.

Epiphone Les Paul Black Beauty

Pros:

Pauleys have been used by personal heroes such as Jerry Cantrell, Jimmy Page, George Harrison, Bob Marley, Jerry Garcia, Duane Allman, Mike McCready, Joe Perry, and more.

Has three humbuckers.

Twenty-two frets (in contrast to the Deluxe player's twenty-one).

Cheaper than a Gibson Black Beauty while retaining the Gibson quality.

Good tone.

Looks amazing.

Cons:

Gold fades on bridge (really doesn't matter that much).

Very heavy.

Costs more than the Strat.

Does not come with gig bag (although once again not much of a big deal).

No tromolo arm.

EDIT:

Forgot to mention, I play a lot of genres, ranging from metal, reggae, rock and roll, the blues, some jazz fusion, trippy psychedelic stuff, punk rock, alternative rock, grunge, hard rock, experimenta avant-gardel stuff, folk/folk rock, blues-rock, progressive rock, funk-ish rock, and more.

i think the pickups are better on the deluxe, they are american vintage noiseless not chinese? pickups of epiphone (its not always true but a general rule for me is that american made stuff is better) plus there are wayyyyy more pickup comobs on the deluxe which can mean only one thing......MORE TONES. (im a tone hunter im sorry)

also i highly advise against choosing a guitar because personal heros play them. im my opinion the main thing is to establish a tone YOU are happy with so go try both and see what sounds best to you

Yeah, tones are good. I play a lot of different types of music, so it should really come in handy (I should probably mention that in the topic post).

I like the Fender line better. I do not like Epiphone's too much, I would prefer the Gibson LP over the Epiphone LP any day. Even if the poll was Fender Deluxe Player VS Gibson LP, I would still pick the Fender. I love the way Fender's sound and play.

Yeah, I myself am leaning towards the Strat, and Fenders in general, I just thought I'd give the BB a chance.

Although, taking it to a Fender board may procure some..."biased" opinions. :D

Maybe a little, but it is my honest opinion.

I have owned a Gibson Flying V and played several Les Pauls (both Gibson and Epiphone) when I was out for my last guitar purchace. A friend of mine had an Epiphone SG that I played for a time. I have always came back to Fender.

I guess it really depends on what you want to sound like. To me the Fender Stratocaster is a very versatile guitar. Blues, Rock, Country, Metal, Punk, whatever you want.

Depends on the sound you want they are both nice guitars. Also just because something is made is Asia does not mean its junk. Epiphone I owns its manufacter company in China to build many of there guitars now days plus many people like myself would look for some of the Korean made Epi's that come from the Saein Korea they were top build stuff and were known to be high quality builds. I am not sure if they do builds for Epi any more because they have been moving there own line of Shine also I think they now do some builds in China.

In my opinion (and mine alone) I personally think the deluxe players is the best option. I can see the angle your coming from though- I would personally own a Les Paul, but the issue is that they are grossly over-priced. I opted for something in between so I got an am-deluxe strat so I can dial in thick tones, though no-where near a PAF sounds, but the reality Les Pauls have something that strats or anything loaded with single-coils doesnt, and that is: balls and volume. My suggestion- dont choose anything because your heroes play them, go for something that YOU like playing, and feels right to you.

Just so you know where I am coming from, I spent most of my guitar-playing life playing Gibsons. And ... for what it is worth ... I have never played an Epi that I ever thought was "great". Conversely I have played many great MIM Strats. So, yeah, I'd take the Strat in a heartbeat.
Epi owners: please take no offense as none is intended towards you or your guitars.

My first fender was an '89 Floyd Rose with a humbucker and two singles... it was a fantastic guitar and arguably the best neck I have played, you should look into that... :)

Funny you should ask- it was mim...? the neck date had 89 on it, and it was just a standard series, not am.standard. It had non-adjustable pole pieces on the bridge p/up and only 1 volume, and 1 tone. I bought it in '95 brand new so may could have been an old neck lying around... Things get to New Zealand a little later than the rest of the world I guess? lol

It also had a label at the top of the headstock that said "Squire Series" FYI
