I think the Stratocaster is a very versatile guitar. I play rhythm mostly. I cut a few leads now and then. Whatever guitar your rhythm player likes to play will be the best for him.

I would have him (or her?) go to a guitar shop and play anything and everything in their price range (not just Fenders either). He should get the one he thinks plays and feels the best.

I heard Rickenbacker guitars are great, easy playing, nice sounding, rhythm guitars, there just a little on the expensive side

Yes. Nice to play and hard on the pocket book. Overall a good choice if price is not an issue.
