What guitars were(are) made in the UK? Were Vox? That's about the only thing that comes to mind. I can think of Italian brands. Burns?

I don't have a pic to show, but my Strat's neck plate has a spade stuck to it. Hence...the Ace of Spades.

Vox started in the uk (dagenham) and moved to italy sometime in the late 60's. Burns were originaly english and later moved to italy too. Watkins (WEM) made the rapier guitar, the first british P.A systems, and some great combo's.

Fleetwood mac were the first band to use their 1500watt P.A. Sometime around 68.

So it seems that Italy is to the UK as Mexico is to the US!

Yes, I knew that very well.

Hi Orville (happy New Year). In addition to what Niki said about Vox, their latest Virage semi was designed in California and is built in Korea (I believe). So by your analogy, America and Korea are the UK's Mexico! Don't think I'm going to be pushing that particular idea...

The name Burns of London hints at something about that company's history. However, our protectionist tariffs of the 1950s never succeeded in giving us a mass-market guitar industry as happened with our amps.

We're excessively good at the small, niche stuff though. The expensive Green Label end of Trev Wilkinson's revived Fret-King brand is built in the UK.

And the guitars this company make are utterly fabulous:

Also, Patrick James Eggle is making magnificent acoustics under his own name once more. Good as anything anywhere:

And I could name you a long list of individual luthiers doing world leading stuff - but all on a fairly small scale, of course.

There: the patriot in Ceri appeared for a moment...

Thanks, ceri. I will have to do some research on Burns of London. A history lesson is in my future! The name Burns has popped onto my screen over the years, but I never had my hands on one (or knew anyone who had one).

There are great small niche builders everywhere, but I was interested in large UK companies. I think Vintage Guitar magazine has had a running column on British guitars. I should dig those out.

I'd argue charlie watkins was more the uk's leo. Started with amplification and made great innovations in that field. Didnt play guitar, but made some good ones and was fascinated by their design.
Heres a quote from a interview he gave a newspaper in 66/67

Like the pop groups who play the music, Mr.Watkins often sits and thinks about what he will do when the electric guitar business finally flops with a last twang. “I love these guitars”, he said, looking at them admiringly,” “They each take six or seven hours to make and are a real work of art. If the day came when no-one wants electric guitars I don't quite know what I would make. It would certainly have to be something which needs a bit of craft. Obviously I could turn to making furniture but that would be too easy and not a bit like making guitars,” he said.

Charlie watkins is still making accordians and amps for em to this day.

The Kahler Spyder Locking Tremelo. While most 80's Fenders with locking Trems are Kahler, the Spyder was a design using Floyd Rose Licensed parts, as stated on the fine tuners and Saddle Locks. The Spyder's production life was short, and quickly replaced by The Steeler. By the early 90's the already strained relationship between Kahler and Floyd Rose ended, and Kahler ceased making Fulcrum Based Tremelos all together.

The other interesting thing about my '88 Strat can't be seen. It doesn't say where it was made!
