So here is the deal...I've started playing with some new guys and am playing alot of new stuff, new for me anyway. I've always played a lot of classic rock strat stuff...Clapton, Jimi, blues etc.

Now I am playing more hard classic rock and looking to perform these songs. Led Zep, AC/DC, Black Sabbath. My primary guitar is a self modded strat with Texas Special pickups...I love this guitar. I know that the middle pickup is reverse wound for hum cancelling properties although never paid this much attention.

So my question is...I have never really played with any pedals outside of a wah, can anyone provide me with some advice or recommend some pedals or other ways of achieving a big classic LP or SG type sound out of a strat with texas special pickups?

First off, what type of amp are you using? That's going to be great help in giving you recommendations. The first thing after that would be very good type of Overdrive\Distortion. I use the crunch channel of my Marshall DSL50 with a TS-808 clone as a boost. That is my primary classic rock tone. AC/DC, ZZ Top, U.F.O., Zepplin, Cream, Rainbow, etc.

You've got your work cut out trying to get a bluesy strat to sound like a sg or lespaul. I certainly wouldnt be looking to pedals to do it. You could end up spending enough to buy a cheap lespaul copy. I'd consider putting a dimarzio PAF in the bridge pickup possition.

I think you need a second guitar. It is hard to get the sound you want out of singal coils.
But if you want to try, a Power Screamer from Homebrew and a tube amp could help.

I have to say if you want a Gibson sound (sorry to be blunt about it), buy a Gibson. Even if you were to buy a Gibson pick up, put it into a Fender Strat, it would still sound like a Strat.

With that said I play Rock, Metal, and have been getting into the Blues lately. I own a HWY 1 Stratocaster and I use a Boss Overdrive/Distortion OS-2 for my Classic Rock and Blues sound. I consider Black Sabbath Classic Rock/pre-Metal. I think I sound more like Black Sabbath with that peddal considering I play a Strat and not a Gibson SG. [/img]

Well its hard to say as those bands also had different tone from one another to me. Most of what I see listed was guys that used humbucker equiped Gibson guitars.

These tones are easy for me to obtain though, but i have humbucker guitars. What I do is use a high gain preamp and turn the gain to around 50% or half way up. I keep the eq's flat, or all turned up half way as well. As a matter of fact, ACDC turns all the dials on their marshalls half way and that is their sound. Keep in mind that some of the crunch comes from the power tubes clipping mixed with preamp clipping, so, unless you polan on turning a 100 watt marshall up half way, that you may not get that exact sound practicing at home. But I get real close just using preamp tube clipping.

As for Led Zepplin, he actuall used a Fender on many of the recordings and you would never know. All of their first album was recorded using a Telecaster and a Supro amp. But it sounds like a LP in a cranked Marshall, so you can get that sound, you just need the right amp. A HB equiped guitar would help, but the key is a good high gain preamp, either built into your amp, or an outboard unit, with the gain at about 50%

That would be my first choice as well.
