I was wondering if anyone knew if you could replace the bridge pickup in an American Deluxe and without sacrificing the S-1 switching. I have the SSS configuration but would like to put a small humbucker in the bridge like a Seymour Duncan 'Lil 59.

I've been reading this forum for a long time but have just started posting. So hello to all and I appreciate all the great info I get from this community.

I don't think it's as simple as it sounds. On my HSS Stratocaster (no S-1), the Fender wiring for position 2 (combining bridge and middle - otherwise known as the Sweet Home Alabama position) combines the middle with only one coil of the humbucker, not both. If you just pop in a humbucker to replace the single coil bridge pickup then your position two is not going to sound like a normal position two. You'd be combining a humbucker with a single coil middle pickup, in parallel. I don't know what that would sound like but it probably wouldn't sound like Sweet Home Alabama. But maybe that's not an issue for you.

But if you want a position two that sounds like other Stratocasters you would have to figure out how to split the coil of the humbucker to combine it with the middle pickup in order to produce the characteristic position two sound. And how to wire it on the S-1. At that point I figure we are off the planet and in serious need of technical assistance.

And I don't think Fender provides a schematic of the S-1 switch. It's pretty much a sealed unit from the photos I've seen.

I have the HSS American Deluxe.......if you're competent in soldering than it shouldn't be a problem for you.If i recall clearly from the wiring diagram of the SSS Deluxe and the HSS Deluxe there are a few differences which i think you'll need to reconfigure from you original SSS to HSS....
Check the under Support and click on Wiring/Schematics....

I'm assuming yours is the American Deluxe Strat with S-1...

Thanks belphedeus. I'm going to have to take these to someone who understands wiring. It looks pretty complicated to an untrained eye. BTW I do have the American Deluxe with the S-1. (SSS configuration)

Edit: Thought I would include a picture.
