I don't think that one is better than the other as they both have duds as well as good ones. The crafted in Japan made Fenders are great quality guitars and are considered to be situated at a higher level than the Mexican guitars. I've owned both CIJ and mainly the classic player MIM's and they're both fantastic. It just depends on what features or what kind you want. A great guitar is a great guitar no matter where it's made.

I agree with last comment, a guitar can be good no matter where it was made... :) but also japanese strats are located in the reputation meter, they are a little higher than in the MIM level :)

Both the Japanese and Mexican models span a range of prices and features/quality, so you cannot make a simple comparison between MIM and MIJ/CIJ.

For example, the high end MIM are "better" than low end MIJ/CIJ.
The high end Japanese guitars (from Fender and other brands) are top shelf compared to anything else!

I think you need to go on a guitar by guitar basis on this one.

Both can be pretty good guitars, and pretty good values. So I guess the one you like better will be the better one. Just do your due diligence, and check them out.

Which is better is a matter of opinion. I would have to say play a bunch of both CIJ and MIM (if you can) and decide yourself. I have played some really nice MIM's and some really nice CIJ's in the past. I think they are both generally good.

Generally I'd say that the Japanese models are better.
