To me the volume knob is a brilliant place. There is no way I can do volume swells while I’m playing on my Les Paul, but on the strat it’s pinky accessible.
It's never been in the way for me, but it all depends on your style of playing I guess.

When I play my Strats I'm always grabbing the Volume with my Pinky to make sure it's still up all the way. I don't even realize I'm doing it half the time.

Same with when I Palm Mute, my Pinky latches right on to the Volume Knob. That way I don't accidentally turn it down, and It gives my hand another anchor point so I don't press down on the trem too hard, thereby knocking it out of tune.

I use that volume knob a lot too, to the point where I need to replace it every other year or so. When I do shows, I roll it off when I'm not playing, during non-guitar parts of songs, and tweak it for various levels of volume/gain during songs.

I don't think I'd want it in any other place, to be honest.

I'm an expert rolling the volume and tone knobs with the pinky.
