Happy New Year to eveyone!!! I'm thinking about replacing my Alnico IIIs in my '07 Highway One Strat with Seymour Duncan SSL1-Vintage pickups to get that old sweet sound, will they fit the bill? I'm also considering Dimarzio Area 58s in the neck and middle positions and an Area 61 in the bridge. I like both but the Duncans are cheaper plus they come in a matched set. Could you guys help with some knowledgeable opinions? I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

If you want a great set up to give you that Ed King spank try the Duncan SSL 5 in the bridge and the SSL1 in the middle and neck. This is a great combination thats used often. Don't believe me, just call Duncan and speak to my friend Alex Semple. Another choice is the Rio Grande Vintage Tall Boys, if they were good enough for Huey in the Outlaws and Skynyrd they should work as well.

Keeping it real in the South...

Fender 57'/62' pickups look like they might be an option for you. They are reverse engineered from a killer 63' strat. I like the vintage Duncans too. Duncan pickups are built to exacting specs and standards. Just look at the fact Duncan build pickups for Fender, Gibson, and just about everyone else worth mentioning. You could go the "botique" route though, like,Fralin, Rio Grande, Sure, Lollar, Van Zandt ...........

Oops, I probably just made it even more difficult to decide, right?

I already have 57/62s in my 2000 MIM Standard Strat so I wanted something different but I have thought about it. BTW I wonder if 57/62s would sound different in my Highway 1?

Happy New Year to you too!

I replaced an OEM 57/62 set with a full set of SSL-1s and used the SSL-1s for 8 years in my #1 Strat. (Note that the middle pickup was not RW/RP). I received lots of compliments on my tone and was very satisfied with them. After the 8 years, I replaced the bridge pickup with an SSL-5 as I wanted the bridge pickup to have a bit more power and sustain. I got the power I wanted but to me, the SSL-5's remaining tonality was too much of an exaggeration of the SSL-1's. So, I put the SSL-1 back in the bridge like a year later. I used the SSL-1s for several more years, changing them in and out for various and assorted high end stuff just for the hell of it until I eventually latched on to the DiMarzio combo which you've cited above. I was incredibly pleased with them like no other pickup set I've ever known but there was that slinky 'something' missing from the neck pickup. Then, DiMarzio came out with the Area 67. I replaced the neck 58 with the 67 and now, I will not even entertain thoughts of ANY other pickup or pickup combo in my Stratocasters, that's how pleased I am with them. To quote what has now becaome a cliche: My quest for the perfect tone is finally over.

You mentioned the Area pickups. I went with the prewired pickguard with the Area 58, 67, and 61. I forget right now where the 58 and 61 are positioned, but the 67 is in the middle.

I love this setup. I replaced my stock 1996 American setup, and the difference was very noticeable. More balanced, better tone, much better tone on the bottom end, plenty of quack. The Area 67 in the middle is awesome. I used to use the middle pickup with the bridge or the neck PU, but seldom used the center PU alone. Now my middle PU is no longer the "forgotten" pickup. The 67 sounds great in the middle all by itself.

Easy install with the prewired pickguard and I sold my old setup on Ebay. Of course the Area PUs are noiseless. I like to record with a computer and they take care of the monitor noise. And yes, they sound like single coils.

The volume and tone controls are much better than the stock 1996 setup. Tone doesn't muddy up when I roll of the volume.

That said, I have nothing against Seymor Duncans. My Telecaster FMT has SD humbuckers in it and I love 'em. I guess I went with the Area PUs cuz I wanted to have a really good vintage strat sound (Alnico) with a noiseless pickup.

The Duncans are great pickups. The SSL series pickups really nail a nice "vintage" sound.

Yes the SSL-1's and the Alnico II Pro's are nice vintage sounding pups many of the other SSL's are somewhat hot sounding and not vintage but nice.

Seymore Duncan's are great Pick-ups. What ype depends on what sound you're going for.
