If the sound has a "sitar" type tone, it is more likely a badly cut (or worn) nut.

If you changed string gauge that can precipitate a "buzz" / "sitar vibe" from a bad cut in the nut.

The fact that the sound is evident on the open string indicts nut, bridge or a "sympathetic vibration" from something else (hardware) on the instrument. That could even be a switch, jack, nut on pot shaft, trem component, etc.

Shim the nut slot of the G and see what happens.

This is a meticulous and frustrating process of elimination and requires patiently running through each potential source of the offending noise.

Keep posting on progress so that we can try to assist.

ndngary - that is a good idea, I will try it tonight

misfit1 - I got the guitar just before Christmas and it did it then. I set it back to factory specs and just chalked up the buzzes to new strings. I had to put it under the tree for about 3 weeks. I have been playing it regularly for the past month and the noise hasn't changed. The wound strings have broken in and quieted down a lot.

Col_F - I think you are right about the "sympatheic vibration". That is going to be hard to track down.

I wanted to thank all responses for their help so far...

The fact that it buzzes on every fret but the 22nd makes me think this is either a truss rod/relief issue, or that your action is too low.
Check the neck relief, as someone described in an earlier reply.
Try adjusting the action by raising the saddle, even if it's too high for you, see if the buzz goes away.
A nut problem shoudn't have that affect on fretted notes.
How is the overall condition of the frets?
Good luck.

A noise from an open string is not fret related.
A noise from a fretted string is not nut related.

The remaining common potential sources are bridge or a sympathetic vibration which could include anything.. but:

Check truss rod nut
Check pots, switches, trem springs etc.

You might want to "stuff" something like a cleaning cloth or thin foam around the trem/springs to eliminate them as a potential source.

You can try to produce the noise while "pushing" on each attached component, one at a time, including bridge components, until you isolate the source....

Let us know...

There's another good idea ... the tuners. It could be anything - maybe remove the knobs from the tone & volume controls and check to see that the nut on the pots are tightened also.

I had the exact same problem with a Standard Tele. It was the nut, I remember that weird sound kept when I stopped the G string. Just try replacing it.

One of the ways to try to "eliminate" or identify the nut as the cause, is to press down on that string behind the nut, which increases the angle of the string as well as the tension, and pluck the string normally while it is still being depressed.

Latest update...hadn't had time to work on it in a while.

This weekend I took off the strings, removed the pick guard assembly and took off the trem and took it apart. There was nothing loose in the pick guard assemby. I moved all of the saddles to a different position. I tightened the nut on the jack plate and all of the nuts on the tuners. The only thing I did not take off was the neck .

After reassembly and new strings, it still makes the noise.
I am going to play it for a while until it needs new strings and then take it to the authorized service center in town and let them have a look/listen. I am still convinced that it originates in the bridge somewhere, but I have gone as far as I can. One thing I did notice is that where the saddle height adjustment screws rest on the top plate of the trem assembly, there are some little wear marks, and they are significantly deeper on the G saddle. Surely that can't be it...especially since I slid a folded up peice of paper between the plate and the screws and it made the noise.

I will update again after the trip to the luthier.

hi there, jst got my strat back and started playing it,rarely been played for ten years so i don't know if iv'e always had this problem its on both the D and G strings

a few nights ago i removed the neck to find out age(it's a wierd guitar) and when i put it back on and played it the "noise" seems more prominent
(not sure if that is just because i play it now and notice more about it.)

there is an adjustment when you slacken the 4 screws that hold the neck in that moves the neck up and down a little (alot if your measuring properly)in relation to the nut and the saddle, i will set that up properly tommorrow, and see how that goes.

after that my next port of call is....the things that hold the strings down on the headstock (string trees i think) one of mine is missing and just so happens to be the one that holds down the D and G strings,

so check yours arn't lose or any other issues, i will post tommorow when i have correctly adjusted that angle.

went to guitar briefly today, i used my fingernail to push down hard on the string whare it goes through the nut, and found the buzz went away,

gonna try and get a string tree today, if that doesn't help, i think the issue lies in the nut, give it a try with yours ill return when i have some progress

ok i guess your guitar is fixed as i just read how old this thread is but for anyone else suffering buzzing i replaced the string trees on my guitar, this has eliminated 90% of my problem, now i have to go back and set up my neck, saddle and pickup hieght and angles, i think my problem is resolved, and it has to be said that this problem is indirectly related to the nut so that will be replaced soon too. good set up videos can be found on you tube will rake through them and find the best one.

a friend once told me that those string trees done nothing! shows what he knew!
hope this has been help to somone else, and thanks for input.
