Hey Everyone,

New to the forum. I have 2006 60th Anniversary HSS Strat. Switched from Ibanez to Fender - what a difference! A Strat is a real quality musical instrument! I play hard rock/metal, blues, contempory Christian music. Question: What is the best type/brand effects pedal and amp for a Strat playing these styles of music?

Most important pedal is of course a Tube Screamer.

Hi Mikamac.....welcome to the Board.Similarly like you i used to play Ibanez only....still have my collection of PGM series and RGs.But after switching to strats i cant get enough of it...
As for effects i kept my current MultiFX (Digitech GSP2101, GNX Workstation and the RP-12)but i did revamped the whole settings as it didn't suit the strats.Especially the EQs and amp simulations.....
But i do have stomp boxes which are kept to minimal and simplicity.....they are mainly the MonteAllums Modded Boss DS-1, Tubescreamer and the Bad Horsie 2...

Hi Mike,
Half of your sound is your amp... use a good one... I use a Twin awesome clean tones and distortion is good on the overdrive channel. I run a Boss DD6 delay thru the effects loop with a Vox Wah occasionally between the amp and guitar. Don't really need anything else. I have run a Pod x3 live for amp modeling but I love that Twin... I play alot of Contemporary Praise music at my Church ala Lincoln Brewster , Steve Fee, New Life Worship, etc... Sometimes I secretly wish we could break into some Flyleaf or some other headbanging metal but all the old people would have a coronary.(and I'm 50) Welcome to the Forum and beware the GAS :D

just get one of them and forget everything else. I wouldnt even plug it into the input of a amp, just plug it into the effects return. All the gain, bass, mid and treb of the amp wont mess up the sound of that piece of art.

Forget the pedal crap. You'll waste a ton of money on 100 pedals chasing a tone you'll never get. Go to the source and the most important factor of your tone chaing - the amp.

Don't "fix" a bad tone from a bad amp with a slew of pedals. Get a good amp that has a great tone, clean and whatever gain level you like. Something you don't need any pedal for. THEN - if you want another effect or something, you can decide that.

That would be my suggestion.

Well said dgonz. There is nothing like a cranked, lower wattage tube amp and a cord and even just a half decent guitar. You'll learn to play better and not rely on effects for sustain, distortion etc.

While I was never fully happy with the 2101, I have been very pleased with it for my strat. It's interesting the way some guitars and amps mate very well, while others just don't mix

If you want to have an awesome clean tone, then add overdrive and distortion with pedals(as I do, and most others, including pros like John Mayer, Eric Johnson, etc.), get something like a '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue(22 watts) or a '65 Twin Reverb Reissue(85 watts). For an overdrive pedal I suggest the Fulltone Fulldrive Mosfet or the Fulltone OCD. These pedals are much better than a tubesceamer, at least a stock one. In my opinion, the tubescreamers are just too fuzzy when the gain is turned up. The Fulltone pedals I mentioned are very transparent and just add gain and a little compression, no fizziness or fuzziness to your tone.
Now the other way would be to get a channel switching amp that has overdrive/distortion on a separate channel(s). These amps can get very expensive. I would suggest a Fender Super Sonic. This is an all tube amp and it has some modern features like high gain distortion, channel switching, and effect loops, as well as vintage Fender clean tones. People use effects loops for modulation effects such as chorus/flanger, delay, digital reverb/echos, etc. because they sound best AFTER the preamp stage. All 3 of these amps I suggested are in similar price ranges and are some of the absolute best sounding amps out there. I saw a Super Sonic at Guitar Center yesterday for $1299. The '65 Deluxe Reverb is $949 and the '65 Twin Reverb is $1299. I love my Deluxe Reverb; it's everything I could ever want. There also is the new Fender Twin Amp. It's a modern, channel switching amp. It's all tube 100 watts, it has a 1/4 power switch to drop the wattage down to 25 watts, it has a full featured effects loop, and it's $1499 at Guitar Center right now. I just personally have no experience with it so I can't really tell you much about it, therefore I'll not comment on it. Sorry for being so long winded. I hope this helps!

Digitech does make some nice stuff. I think the current model is GSP1101. It offers a lot for $500.

My personl opinion, though, is that at least 90-95% of your tone should already be "there" between your amp and guitar (paying alot of attention to your pickups). Your tone should already be sweet before any effects, so the effects only tweak and color the tone, not take it over. In particular, I think a lot of tone chasers out there focus too much on stomp boxes, when what they seek could be remedied by the right pickup or amp.

Just my $0.02...

totaly true. Pedals were only ever designed to compliment playing, not to take over.

First, get a great tube amp--if you're playing out, the 1965 ReIssue Deluxe Reverb is great...the Crate V-series tube amps are really nice for the money, as is the Peavey Classic 30. For more power, try the 1959 Reissue Bassman Ten. I don't really like the Hot Rod Devilles and Deluxes, but to each his own.

If you can find used amps easily, look at the old silverface Fender tube amps--still affordable, and the quality is better than people give them credit for...I had a 1972 Bassman Ten with master volume that I still kick myself for selling!

For smaller applications (or if you can mic your amp for live performances), it's got to be the Fender Blues Junior...15 watts of heaven!

For pedals, an Ibanez TubeScreamer (TS9 or TS808 are best) and an MXR Phase 90 are indispensible to me...

I will be getting a seymour duncan tweak fuzz in about a week. In my opinion all you need is a fuzz and lots of treble with a good amp. I am a treble freak.

Longtime HSS user here.
My advice- Get a nice clean sound out of your amp and find a old rat pedal for your dirty stuff.
