Hello fellow Strat lovers,

I'm soon going to start purchasing parts for my Partsocaster but I have a question. I've already (thanks to this forum) found out that any pickup route (HSH, HSS or HSS) will accommodate a SSS configuration.

My new question is: can I use a regular MIA neck on a MIA Deluxe body? I've noticed that the Deluxe's use a 4-hole pattern like this:

But it looks like other than the 5th drilled hole, the necks are the same.

So, if I were to drill a 5th hole, would this neck work on a deluxe body?

BTW, if you're wondering why I'd want to do such a thing, I REALLY want a 70's style neck with the big headstock. I've found MIA necks with the 70's headstock with the micro-tilt, so other than the hole differences the neck would have the same features (as far as I know) as the deluxe necks.

Can this work? Has anybody done this? If so, do you have pics?

Thanks!
Ryan

It can be done no problem. You could fill in the hole that's not going to be use, but there's really no reason to. You may want to put it in with the holes that match up, then use a drill to start the 4th hole. IMO the design of the american dlx neck is much better than a 70s, but to each his own. Thers a tilt adjustment in the deluxe neck too, but it doesn't have the headstock. If the 70s neck has the narrower nut and smaller fretboard radius, you'll have to change up your saddle configuration to match the roundness of the fretboard, but you probably know that. The guitar I have now had the 7 1/4 radius fretboard, I personally can't stand it, really inhibits string bend for me.

Thanks for the reply windwalker! Sounds like it might not be completely worth it, as I didn't think about little things like the narrower nut and smaller fretboard radius affecting the overall setup. I'm sure the Deluxe necks are GREAT as my MIM deluxe players neck is amazing and the MIA could only be better. Maybe Ill just go with what was intended and build a 70's replica later on in life.

IMO, American Deluxe are the best Fender makes. THey put alot of work and attention into them. The frets are usually perfect, as with the nut. I really dont like the vintage necks. They're great for rhythm playing, because the curvature of the fretboard makes barring chords really easy and comfortable, but like I said, playing leads leave much to be desired, your have to make sure to use your finger tip or you end up fretting other strings, bends are more difficult, etc. I had to raise the action on mine pretty high so I dont catch other strings when bending. I dont really mind the slightly narrower neck, I mean the nut's only like a millimeter narrower, but that combined with the round fretboard makes it feel like Im playing a broomstick. I'd kill to be able to replace it with an American Deluxe neck. If you played a MIM Deluxe players, you may notice this neck feels a bit rounder too, due to the fact the Deluxe players strat has a 12 inch radius vs. a 9.5 on the AMerican deluxe, the deluxe players is pretty flat. To me this is the flip side, i found it a little more difficult to do barr chords because of it, but leads and bends were great. I'm sure id get use to it though, I only played one for a half hour. I'm actually pretty use to this neck, though i had to adapt my playing. I had a brand new american deluxe before this one, but it was stolen a few months ago, believe me I was heart broken, I still miss that guitar. Do yourself a favor, make sure you get pictures of it, and write down the serial number. Also, now I put my initials under the the claw screw plate, so they cant be seen in case it gets stolen. Good luck, enjoy the strat.
