Wiping it down after every session with a dry, soft cloth. Periodically I like to use Dr. Duck's Axe Wax on it, keeping it healthy and moist.

Clean it every time you change the strings.

Some of the Dunlop stuff is good.

GHS Fast Fret isn't bad, I've used that for years to clean strings before gigs and keep the neck in decent shape.

My favorite is Gibson (sorry Fender) Luthier's Fretboard Conditioner. Great stuff to oil that board maybe once or twice a year.

This all depends on how beat up your neck gets....
- If you don't wash your hand and play, you'll get a ton of crud on that neck and want to clean it more often and deeper.
-If you have that sweat that rusts everything it touches, you might want to clean it more too.
- If you live in a cold area and have the furnace on a lot, that can dry your neck out. You'll want to keep in the case when you're not playing and maybe oil it a little more often.
-If you keep your hands clean and take care of your stuff, you won't need to clean it very often.

There is no one perfect formula for this other than a little knowledge, some testing, and common sense.

I always wipe down the strings and fret board, after every time I play it. I also use Gerlitz Guitar Honey on the fretboard to give it a good cleaning and condition the wood, whenever I change strings. It seems to darken the rosewood and gives it that "new" look. That product is not for maple though. I buy it at Guitar Center.

If you don't have a Guitar Center near you.....you can purchase it on their website.

I use Dr. Stringfellows Lem-oil Fret board conditioner I have made some very badly kept fret boards look and feel good with this stuff.

I have 2 guitars with Rosewood fretboards. In fact most of the guitars I have owned have had Rosewood fretboards. I wipe down the guitar after each use with a soft dry rag. Wipe the strings down as well. Every now and then I use Lemmon Oil to nourish the wood on my fretboard. I try not to do it too often as I do not want to over oil the wood. That can be bad too.

Wipe it down with a soft cloth, 100 percent cotton t-shirt works well or any old flannel material you may have. Use lemon oil only when the fretboard looks lighter in color or dry, and use very little. Too much can raise the grain on the wood or losen any glues around frets , ect. If you have oily skin you may never have to do any conditioning, only cleaning due to the natural oils from your hand. A toothpick works wonders for lightly cleaning beside the frets. Hopes this helps.

I do some of these maintenance tips for all my fingerboards, especially for rosewood. Basically I just wipe it down with an old cotton T-shirt.

However, only the acoustic Alvarez and my 1971 Stratocaster have rosewood fingerboards. I did not seek an alternative surface for my fingerboards, but I have ebony (as in violin) fingerboards on my 1991 Strat Ultra and the 1993 Gibson ES-347. I have a newer finished (urethane based?) Maple neck on the Baja Telecaster, which may better resist sweat marks. Are there any thoughts on maintaining these alternative surfaces? :?
