Hey Stratsters,

I'm putting together a Partscaster with a Hwy 1 body (Oct 2008) with included bridge. The bridge string spacing is 2-1/16". Can I upgrade to S. Vintage bridge assembly (everything) with the wider 2-7/32" saddles? The current mounting holes are already 2.-7/32" wide so is appears that I could swap out the whole bridge assembly including the block. Are there any clearance issues or nightmares to avoid?

This is a real newbie question but are the string balls suppose to end up inside the block or remain outside? If inside how the hell do you get them out on a string change? I think I have Ernie Ball on there now.

Thanks a lot for your knowledge... Scott

They're supposed to be inside the block. I think you should be fine replacing it and moving up to the larger spacing. Are you getting a Callaham?? If so they would tell you on the website under block info. If you're not getting Callaham, you really should, they blow the original Fender clean out of the water.

Thanks windwalker. Inside the block.... Is there a trick to getting the string balls out when they get stuck while the block is still mounted? Or is it a no brainer?

I was thinking about upgrading to a Callaham bridge. It appears I need some extra saddle slot length for intonation purposes as I have run out of room on the stock saddles. The Callaham saddles with the elongated slot makes sense.

I looked at the Callaham web site and they mention the Hwy. 1 body (2006 or later) uses their Mexican style block and saddles but they make no mention of upgrade to full Vintage spacing of 2-7/32" so I was wondering if I am missing something obvious in the mechanics of it all. Plus the full Callaham S. Vintage upgrade kit (block, saddles, trem arm, claw, strings, screws, etc) is about the same price as Mexican saddle/ block only upgrade. The full Mexican upgrade kit is about $50.00 additional over the S Vintage kit. So the S. Vintage kit makes sense while upgrading the string spacing to something more traditional.

Oops. Callaham recomends the V/N upgrade ($175) kit for the Hwy 1 (2006+) with 2-7/32" mounting screw width and 2-1/16" string spacing but I am interested in upgrading to the Vintage S ($127) with 2-7/32" mounting and string spacing. Jeez this is complicated!
