Hi All and Merry Christmas!
My sweetheart bought me my dream guitar for Christmas- a Fender Standard HSS sunburst Strat with a rosewood neck.
She ordered it new from one of Canada's biggest music stores which unlucky for me is in another provence.
Anyway, upon inspection I found the block has been drilled on a angle and some rough fretwork but the one thing that has me worried is the truss rod. Looking down in the hole, the top is somewhere under the first fret.
Should I be concerned about this? I've never seen one this deep before.
Thanks all and happy holidays!

Send it back. Rough fret work can be expecter ( I saw it on a $1600 american hotrod a couple days ago) and all that should be addressed during the setup everyone should pay for as soon as you get a new guitar, even on a used one that seemsa fine. But a sunken truss rod isn't. Unless its some weird new design, the hex end for the wrench should be in the headstock end of the nut.

I have to agree with windwalker. Definitely send it back and demand a replacement. There is something seriously out of place with that one, and it never should have gotten past QC inspection at the factory.
See what happens when you let people drink beer on the job?
Merry Christmas!

Thanks alot guys.
I didnt think it was right. I compared it to my 2 other (Squire) Strats and my Tele and none of them had it that deep.
I have to say though, what a letdown. I have always loved Strats (25 year player) main axe has been a Mid-90's Squire that I've recorded and toured with but always wanted a Fender to replace her in her retirement-she has earned it.
Any idea how I should go about this? The store that it was purchased from is very far away. Is this a Fender problem where I can bring it to a local Fender dealer and have them send it to Fender?
Also, this is under the warrenty right?
Thanks again.

it should definitely be under warranty, and the store should be obliged to replace the guitar because they can get an exchange under warranty from the factory. That is their problem to deal with, not yours. all that should be needed is the purchase recipt or invoice with the date purchased, and contacting the store to make the arrangements.
Typically, you will have to pay the shipping cost to send it back but they will cover the shipping of the replacement to you.
The store will give you a Return Authorization number to ship it back with. This should be the proper way to go about it. However, different stores may have different policies, and they may tell you that you will have to get a warranty return number from Fender, or it's Canadian Distributing agency.
I would suggest contacting the store to see what the proper steps would be

I'd assume it is under the warranty... you can probably take it to an authorized fender center and they will probably order a new strat or a new neck mmm I have no clue about what they would do :)

Thank you Harley.
I'll give the store a call tommorrow.
1 more stupid question-It will just be the neck replaced right? I ask because my girl wrote me a note in marker on the inside of the spring cover on the back
Oh,and I hope the turnaround time is short!

It could be just the neck that they may replace, the store would have to answer that, I cannot.
I would suggest going over the rest of the guitar with a fine tooth comb and looking for any other issues that may exist. It's better to address them all at once.
As for turnover time, that would really be a tough one for me to answer, since we're talking about a warranty issue that has to go between the US and Canada. I would say this would depend on how good the store is that the guitar was purchased from because, this would be their reputation for customer service and support that would be on the line. If they expedite all the paperwork and get things done in a timely manner, it could be a relatively short turnover.

Oh, one other thing that will be very important to have on hand will be the Serial# of the guitar. That will also have to be transferred to a new neck, or guitar, whichever they decide is the proper way to go.

Cool, thanks Harley.
I was going to let the block thing go but if it is going back to the mothership I may as well get them to take care of those things.

I would agree, Fender has been working too hard for the past 20 years to overcome the reputation they earned when CBS was at the helm in the late 70's. Complaints were coming back to Fender from all over the world because they were putting out 500 guitars a day back then, but they sacrificed the quality when they did that.
While CBS is no longer at the helm, I'm pretty certain that the current management does'nt want to see that ghost of their past come back to haunt them.

Agreed. I mean, this wasnt even a second hand axe- it is brand new.
I could overlook the smaller things, but the neck is something I dont want to mess with.

I hear you Monty,

For the most part, Fender's quality has been really excellent for the last two decades. My only complaint would be that they keep changing things so much. You may find a model you really like and get used to, and after a few years of hard playing, parts may need replacing, and that particular guitar may discontinued. it can be a bear finding genuine Fender parts for a guitar like that.

True indeed. You think its hard for a Fender, try a 17 year old Squier, lol.
On the quality, I guess just as I got lucky with the Squier being of superb quality, i got unlucky with the Fender being sub-par (coupled with the fact I think Steves Music figured they could unload a dog to a girl from another province who doesnt know much about guitars  )
