Lucy Brown,

This has been an interesting thread. Very heated topic. This is what makes us human is the right to have such varying opinions. I like Nirvana as a band, I do not like Cobain as a person. I always saw him a a sleeze. And again, I would never pay $100,000 for a broken guitar no matter who used it.

If , I had 100k to burn , I would buy one hundred new MIA standards and pass them out to school kids of all ages . And fellow there progress and see what happens . If one makes a diffence then the money is well spent .

And for Kurt . C I dont care . He just could not take the heat . I realy think that these people are realy missed up in the head , all these movie stars and rock stars well no not rock lets say "pop" stars .

And you what I learned by listening to Vivaldi, Mozart, Gordon, Lynch, May and Page? To recognize what is good music and what is garbage. Nirvana were garbage, of the worst kind.

Dude, I know growing up under those high-power lines left you with "limitations", so let's address only two of your points:

1) "Lynch"? As in George Lynch?? Very talented guitar player, but we are talking about the music here. And you are going to lean on Dokken and Lynch Mob as one of your pillars of great music?? You have just lost any shred of credibility you may have had.

2) Nirvana is "garbage of the worst kind"? Really? Personally, I'd put Justin Timberlake there, but I diverge... If you really haven't listened to it, you should not express any opinion on it (especially one so strong). And if you have listened to it, and can not find a modicum of musicality, you are flat out musically ignorant. I am not saying you must like it. But there is a difference in appreciating someone's music, and whether you like it or not. Example: Many people can "appreciate" the musicality of opera, but they strongly dislike it.

Im just gonna jump right in and offend some people. I didnt know Cobain when he was alive, but heres what I know about him now:

1) He had pretty much become a HUGE commercial success and millions of people werent just digging his music, they were BUYING it

2) Probably for the first time in their careers he and the band had come into REAL MONEY

3) He had recently hooked up with lady (C. Love)

4) They were having a baby.

5) Even leaving the other reasons off the table he still had health, his guitar, what else do you really need?

Instead of living his life, he chose to eat a shotgun. Even if he didnt WANT to live, I bet his kid is wishing he hadnt done that.

In my mind he Cobain was the worst kind of selfish #$%^& that embodies all that is wrong with mankind. He shoulda pulled the trigger BEFORE all those kids were lookin up to him and rockin his music. BEFORE Nirvana went big and the rest of the band needed to stick together to make more music and money.

...Or how about BEFORE he fathered a child?
Good Riddance.

I agree that $100K to burn COULD have helped a LOT of people instead of just buying some broken wood and wire. ESPECIALLY in this economic climate. I guess selfishness never dies huh?

Wow, some of you obviously don't know anyone or have family members with a mental illness. To disparage an individual that took their own life is not only insensitive and mean spirited, it is downright irresponsible. Now, I know who the people are who would scream "jump" or "go ahead and do it". I hope that you never have to deal with pain of losing someone you care about to depression or mental illness. You never get closure and that type of pain never really heals. Shame on you, you should feel genuine embarrassment for your complete ignorance and lack of judgement.

Whether you like Cobain or Nirvana has become irrelevant in this discussion. It seems that a few "blowhards" were really into the '80's "butt-rock". There is a reason that style of music hasn't had a resurgence and alternative/grunge is still alive in some form (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Black Keys, The Hives, etc.).

Finally a good point was brought up when it was mentioned that MANY musicians today will publicly say that Cobain was an influential artist. Peer acceptance is the highest form of flattery and, in my opinion, holds far greater merit than that of a bunch of anonymous internet users.

p.s. Didn't Eric Clapton's "Stella" (Harmony, Silvertone, Sears) acoustic guitar sell for $30,000? Oh yeah, it did. Hmmm, a $20 P.O.S. that was never played live vs. a vintage Mustang that was obviously played live and ceremoniously destroyed (which was a pseudo calling card for that particular artist).

People who have money don't have the same mindset as you or I. To try and rationalize something out of their context is a futile exercise.

+1 :D Seinfeld is a great show. Actually, I'm kind of skeptical on whether or not Kurt actually killed himself. If you look at the evidence it ends up being quite suspicious. No fingerprints on the shotgun, His drug dosage being way too much for him to be actually doing anything, his wife hiring someone to kill him until he was found out 8 days before Kurt was murded, etc. I'm not saying that he didn't kill himself, but I think it can be anyone's guess. My conclusion: I don't know.

Ahhh...I love the conspiracy theories. Truth be known, Courtney did it for the money.

Cobain was a good lyricist but don’t really see much contribution to guitar. Grunge really did nothing more than what punk had done 20something years earlier. People got tired of the over bloated 60’s and 70’s self indulged music scene and offered an outlet. I was a freshman in college when Nevermind broke as well as the grunge scene so yeah I’ve played a lot of the covers. So with that said I can truly say nothing beats the Stones of the Mick Taylor era or Queens of the stone age….you know bands that play music for music’s sake. Nothing against you Cobain but the best thing that could of happened for you career………happened

I didnt intend it to be. I'm really quite surprised. I just posted it since I thought we were all Fender fans here and it would be an interesting story to share. Then people starting lobbing hate grenades. Reminds me of the 70's when I was a big Ramones fan. People would get mad and want to beat me up becuase I liked the Ramones. It was ridiculous. If you didnt like Zepplin or Sabbath or some other commercially accepted band you were like nazi or something. Now all these chodes are like 40 something wearing Ramones T shirts. This also reeks of the Sex Pistol tour of the south where people would show up to the show just to throw bottles at the band out of pure hatred for the punk movement.

This thread really did start off a lot of touchy feelings didn't it? IMO, I was never a big Nirvana fan at all. I never cared for Cobain's singing and I always thought that his guitar playing left a lot to be desired, although he did write some really great lyrics. But what really pissed me off about him was back in 1992, I was reading a interview with him in Guitar World, when the interviewer asked him what he thought of Leo Fender, to which his response was " You mean that dead guy?" Right there and then, I lost all respect for him as a human being and a musician. To me, he was nothing more than a junkie who couldn't handle the pressures and the responsibilities of fame and parenthood, and rather than be a man about what was bothering him and try to seek professional help, he took the coward's way out. So to whoever was stupid enough to pay $100,000 for Kurt's smashed up guitar, I'm sure that right now,Courtney Love is having a good laugh at your expense pal!

If I met Cobain myself I probably wouldn't like him much either. But just because you don't like someone doesn't mean you should say how bad they are. To me it only agitates the problem. He obviously had issues and he probably had a lack or respect for a lot of things, but that kind of behavior should be changed, not made worse with hateful words...Man, I almost sound like a hippie. . Peace.

Not to try to change anybodies opinion but one of the things about Cobain was that he didnt like or really want his fame. He was a very conflicted person. In high school he wasnt a popular person. All the people in the in crowd paid him no mind or mistreated him in some way then all of sudden these same people are moshing in front of him and stage diving into the crowd. It drove him nuts. The lyrics to school are in refrence to this. "wouldnt you believe it, just my luck. your in highschool again"...

Anyway as far as the price paid for the guitar, anything is worth whatever your willing to pay for it. I peronally wouldnt give you 2 cents for a collectible stamp or coin but some people pay thousands of dollars for this stuff. What ever floats your boat. Just like your taste in music. Just becuase you dont like it doesnt mean it sucks.

It was interesting that a broken guitar would yeild $100,000. I too was into the Ramones (in the 80's). A lot of my friends didn't understand, but I liked them. A couple years later my friends were listening to them as well when Punk Rock made a come back (in my town).
