I love this guitar in the way it plays. But it is too noisy for me. I was thinking of changing pickups, with Fender vintage noiseless. Would this be a worthy swap? I am looking for a nice fat sound. I do not plan on running alot of gain. Is there other steps I could take to get rid of noise? Mine was a 96 or 97 model, can't remember when I bought it for sure. Any advise would greatly appreciated. If any one has listened to Eli Cook, then that is the kind of sound I want.

for fat dont get vintage noiseless. Their very thin vintage sounding. I found them to be a very aquired taste. I installed em on my strat 6 months ago and am only now (after all kinds of pot/capacitor changes getting used to em.
I'd look at either Scn's(which i think sound superb) or the dimarzio area series pickups. I've no experience of those but they receive good reviews from knowledgable people on this forum.

Thanks, I do prefer not to install scn's. What about the HOT vintage noiseless ones?

Ok, scratch that last comment! I was doing more research on the scn's and they sound like they are what I am looking for. Any comments on these?

I think the tone and volume pots are garbage on MIM Fenders. I run Tex-Mex pickups in my strat, that are from a Jimmie Vaughan strat. They sound great. I get a bit of noise in the usual 1,3, and 5 switch positions, it's typical though. If you aren't using a lot of gain it shouldn't be too bad. I'd recommend changing the pots, switch and jack and see what you think. If you end up changing the pickups you should change them anyway. You might be suprised to see what a difference it makes. Might as well save some cash. If you want real quality "noisless" pickups it'll cost a little. SCN's, Kinmens, stacked Duncans, .............. not cheap. Like I said, if you purchase any of these pickups you NEED to get new "guts" so start there first. The Tex-Mex pickups are pretty great in my opinion. My $0.02, keep the change.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking that too. What do you recomend for pots, switch and jack? What about shielding?I dont think there is any in my guitar. My esp when I looked inside of that and there is the metal shielding every where and the wires have a braided covering over them. That guitar is very quiet. Do you think all of this would make a big difference? The noise is the only problem I have with this guitar right now. Thanks again.

I have Texas Specials in one of my Strats, very nice deep tone. Check them out as well.

CTS pots, Switchcraft jack, and Oak Grigsby switch. You can find these pre-assembled on-line. The capacitor/s are included and the soldering is pro grade. The only thing you need to solder is the pickups and the jack. It's not much cheaper to do all the soldering yourself, but if you mess up...So,it's worth a little extra cash to go pre-assembled. Plus, you can get many control options too. 8)

Check out the website GuitarNuts.com The article called "Shielding a Strat", and is very informative. If you like the tone of your single coils, upgrading your shielding could be the answer. If I recall correctly, the JV model's shielding leaves a bit to be desired.
