Hello all. I recently purchased a Fender DeLuxe Player Strat body and I found it to have a hole in the body of which the previous owner did not know the meaning of either. He did send me a photo of a Telecaster which had the same hole, only three of them, besides the neck pickup. I don't have a picture of the Strat but the Tele picture is clear enough.

My question: Does anyone know where those holes/that hole are/is for?

Thanks a lot and Merry Xmas and a happy New Year from Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Just as old as the Stratocaster, but with a better body  .

There's a lot of holes in the body, exactly which one you talking about.

I also found those stuffs in my MIM stratocasters. It was original from fender, i think....
the function, i don't know exactly, but my luthier said that those holes change the sound....even just a little

Merry Xmas and Happy New Year 2009 too, from Bogor, Indonesia

Maybe they are recessed support points to be used during the finishing process. I know Fender used smaller (but similar) ones "back in the day" to keep the body level during the finishing process.

Hi 63supro,

I mean the three holes to the right of the neck pickup in the Mickey Mouse shape. The Strat body has only one, though, on the same spot.

Hi ShereKhan, welcome to the Forum.

You're talking about the three holes on the face of the body beneath the pickguard in the picture, right? As well as the one that Tele has in the neck pocket.

Holes comparable to that appear on most (all?) modern American and Mexican Strats. We've talked about them before on the Forum: a popular idea is that they are to do with positioning the body during the CNC (Computer Numeric Control) routing procedure.

That sounds likely, but so far nobody has been able to say for certain - as far as I am aware. They are obviously not to do with holding the body during finishing, since the paint is inside the holes as well.

I'd be completely astounded if even Eric Johnson can hear a difference in tone between a body that has those holes and one that doesn't. But they are a bit aesthetically displeasing. And they don't appear on Vintage Reissue bodies, to the best of my knowledge.

Cheers - C

Hi Ceri,

Thanks for your explanation. However if the holes are for keeping the body in place during the fabrication, one would expect them to be more divided over the body for a firmer grip. But as long I don't know for sure the reason they are there, your explanation is very liable.

Hello ShereKahn,

My '62 hotrod doesn't have any extra
hole I just had the pickguard off.
But I'm pretty shure my Deluxe has that
"indexing" hole.

Cheers.

they could only be under the pickguard as its the only viable way to hide them when the guitar is finished. Notice they work in conjunction with the hole in the neck pocket.

Again a very liable explanation, if it wasn't for the fact that the Strat body only has one hole, and no one in the neck pocket. For me it remains a mystery.

That makes sense. I was a CNC machinist and foreman for many years. Makes me wonder if they have a location jig or fixture to put a wood blank. That would pretty much make the procedure idiot proof. These things are no longer made by craftsmen, just people loading machines.

Could it be evidence of extraterrestrial involvement in Fender's manufacturing process?

The truth is out there!

I came across this problem with my Jazz bass,I wanted to take the scratch plate off so my bass would look like Jaco's bass.

I have huge channels routed out for the pickup that go straight to the pots where in the past they used to drill a small hole and feed the wires through, and a hole mindlessly drilled into the body.

It has to be for routing out the pickups and pots, just goes to show Fenders are not made as well as they use to be its called mass production :(

Hi again, ShereKahn: in fact, my American Strat does have one of those holes in the neck pocket as well as another under the pickguard.

If I remember right my MIA has exactly the same route as a MIM of Nikininja's that he posted a picture of, and many others too. Whatever the function of those holes it is clearly a generic pattern, common to guitars made in several countries.

Cheers - C

My Left Handed late 2006 Highway 1 Strat does not have any holes like that.
