I just recently bought a 98 American Strat offline. Once I got it everything was nice and it appeared to be well taken care of. The only problem that I felt was on the back of the neck. The stripe piece seemed to be ever so slightly loose on one of the edges, maybe from having the truss rod adjusted? I'm new to Stratocasters so I'm not real sure how serious of a problem it is and how I can fix it. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, If I saw that I would think it is a repaired neck that had the truss rod changed or probably it didn't but it was opened up anyway... that can be good or bad or terribly bad and also that little factor would make that guitar's value considerably low to the regular selling price of that type of guitars on ebay..... can you post some pictures of it here?? :)

Hi Oakfan, welcome to the Forum.

Are you saying that there is actually movement in that walnut strip (the "skunk stripe")? That really doesn't sound good. Can you see a gap between the walnut and the maple of the rest of the neck?

It would be phenominally difficult to get that strip out: it seems likely that any gap opening up would be due to the wood expanding and contracting with changes of humidity. Do you know anything of the history of the guitar - has it travelled about a lot?

Anyhow. We'd love to see pictures if you can get one or two good ones, close up and in focus. But if there's a chance of repairing it then you'll need to consult a really well qualified luthier. I'm guessing it would be a case of trying to wick hide glue into the gap - but I dunno...

Good luck - C

I will try to get some pictures up of it so you can check it out. I'm not sure at all about the guitar's history other than it was said to be in great condition which for the most part it is. At this point I have no choice really other than looking into getting it fixed at some point but I expect that to be really expensive so Ill have to wait. Hopefully Ill get it worked out because I really do love the guitar and the way it sounds. Thanks for the advice
