Hey all, I've been looking at getting a strat for a few months now, trying to narrow down the different models...anyway, I've found I like the American V neck and the 50's player classic (also with a V neck). On paper, he JV looks like a winner, but I can't find one locally to play. Can someone compare the neck shape to the other V necks I've played? I've heard they're very similar to the American V neck, and I've heard they are big, beefy necks too. Who's right? For the record, both V necks I have played felt thinner than a MIM standard and HWY 1.

THanks!
Pat

My three main guitars are a 1990 Signature Clapton Strat, a 2006 60th anniversary and a J. Vaughan. The neck on the Vaughan feels, to me, very thick and chunky. A friend tells me (and I never looked at the specs to verify) that the Vaughan neck is shaped just like my Clapton. I don't believe it. It feels quite different to me. Another friend played my Vaughan strat recently and made a comment about how much he loved the neck. I'm not crazy about it, but I don't dislike it enough to get rid of it. Overall, it is a great guitar, especially for the price. There is a lot of neck there. It is the kind of neck you would expect a Texas blues man to want. And I guess that's why it is on the Vaughan strat. My suggestion is NOT to buy it before you've had a chance to play it. Go into GC and if they don't have one on the wall, ask them to order it. If it comes in and you don't like it, they will put it on the wall and sell it to someone else.

As a side note, I met Jimmie Vaughan about 6 or 8 weeks ago in Providence (I met him once before in Philadelphia back in 1990, a few weeks before his brother died). He is one of the nicest guys you can ever hope to meet. While some musicians sign fan autographs as they are walking, keeping a shoulder to the fan, hand the sharpie back and keep on walking, Jimmie stops, faces you, signs, then gives you his complete attention. I started talking to him and he put his hands in his pockets and stood there listening to me as if I had something real and important to say. He doesn't want to talk about himself. He wants to talk to you, the fan. I asked him to sign my pickgguard. When I told him it was from his signature strat, he looked at me for a second, almost like he forgot he had a signature guitar.

I've met a lot of recording artists and he is, by far, the nicest guy. He has some serious star power.

Thanks for the reply! I'll definitely find one to play. GC said they'd order one, on the condition that I bought it, then I could return it if I didn't like it. I just feel bad doing that, as I'd prefer to pick up a used one. I have smaller hands, but the other V necks 'felt' slimmer than a C neck of similar thickness. So, would you say it feels thicker than your Clapton? There is one of those locally I could try out.

BTW, Jimmie sounds like a great guy. Haven't met too many of my heros, but the ones I have met made me feel that I was inconveniencing them!

Thanks,
Pat

Yes, thicker than the Clapton.

Glad I could help!

 hello; check around for a one owner shop that has a Fender neck sample board. I've never seen one at a GC anywhere, but some smaller shops have them. The board has all the neck versions attached so you can take them down and compare.
