I heard the same thing. I am not sure how true it was either.

That was going on back when they first opened the Mexico plant. Now all the MIM parts are MIM too.

Sometime between 2003 and 2006. Sorry I can't pin it down tighter than that! I've seen photo tours of the Mexican factory from those years. In the 2003 tour, the necks were coming from the US, while in the 2006 tour, the equipment was up and running to make their own necks.

I've been told the only difference between a MIM and a MIA strat is that MIA's are made in America by Mexicans and MIM's are made in Mexico by Mexicans :P

I dont know, all I can tell you is the one I just picked up is a 2007, and it looks like they dipped the damn thing in paint. I spent over an hour and a half last night sanding all the finish off the inner cavities. On the American Dlx i had, when i looked into the back of it, where the tension springs and tremolo block was, it was pretty much bare wood, which I want. THe mexican looks like the painted the whole damn thing, plus the finish is really thick on it.

One of the reasons the MIM's are less expensive is less attention is paid to "the little things".

They play well and look good but they aren't as "nice" as the MIA's.

No way near as nice. It's the nuance that they're missing. And newer players dont know about the little things, so its no big deal. WHen I'm trying out an electic before I buy, i play it for the first hour unplugged. I look for a good primary tone, I want to feel how strong/long I can feel it vibrate up the neck. I put my finger tip on the tip of the headstock, and play the G/Bstrings, and look for good vibration. MY AMer/ Deluxe would vibrate for days. the Mexican not so much, although since I removed all the paint of the inside, and around the neck pocket, its gotten much better.

BTW- Im not a Roadie, I dont know why it says that under my name.

The title under you name is in relation to the number of posts you have made to the site. It changes as you make more posts.

It's refreshing to be able to discuss the MIA/MIM differences without people getting all emotionally twisted up.

It does seem that quite a few newer (and some more experienced) players do only look at how pretty a guitar is and listen to how good it sounds amplified and with the signal processed. That's how they play, so that's how they "test drive". Not bad or "wrong" but you do notice more subtleties "unplugged".

I also like to first check out a guitar straight into an amp "clean". That will tell you alot too.

For me it's not about how many guitars I have, but rather that the guitars I do have are the best I can possibly afford.

Yeah, and when I do plug in, I pretty much only play it clean. Any effects can cover-up any drawbacks you would notice clean. I mean, with the right amp and effects settings, JC Penny special would sound good through them, though later on, when you're going to a clean sound, you might regret your choice. Plus, I dont know about most of you, but the further and further I progressed in playing, and the more my musical tastes matured, I seemed to dial back more and more with effects. So now most of the effects I do use are more "vintage" effects- reverb, tremolo etc. I use Flange, hi-gain distortion and those things hardly ever. When I first started playing, I wanted to play Megadeth, Metallica, those kind of things. Now its Clapton, SRV, and those types of things.

Haha. That's sort of true. Looking at the stamp on my '62 RI it is not hard to figure out the ethnicity of it's creator.

I heard in the classic player series, the necks are American made and everything else is MIM except for the pickups. This true?

Some owners might tell "gear snobs" this to try and fend off unwarranted assaults on the quality of their guitars. I hadn't heard this particular rumor until just now.

I could not have said it better. I am guilty of telling people to try out a guitar before they buy...what I should tell them is to play it unplugged and through an amp clean before using the distortion or other effects. I know I do. Right now I only have 2 guitars at this time and both of them were the best I could afford at the time they were purchaced.
