I got to admit I've never really heard any of his stuff. Except maybe the Brick in the wall. I've always hated Pink Floyd. I don't know why. Maybe it's because to me it just sounds like a lot of stoners making weird sounds. I'm bored with all the stuff I've been listening to all my life and keep hearing how great DG is. So my question is can anyone out there give me some songs of theirs/his to listen to so I can become a fan? I would prefer not to have to listen to any 13 min long songs for a few riffs/licks. Please don't attack me it's just one of those things. I've just never heard much of his stuff.

Thanks,

You'll probably find most of A Momentary Lapse of Reason to be fairly easy to listen to, especially "The Dogs of War."

Most of the tracks on The Wall are fairly short and accessible. Check out "Run Like Hell."

Wish You Were Here is mostly made up of one long song called "Shine On You Crazy Diamond." Based on what you've said, it sounds like that wouldn't appeal to you, but give a listen to "Have a Cigar" and the lovely acoustic title track.

And if you like what you hear with these recommendations, open your mind to the longer songs on the sublime Animals album.

Young Lust, Have a Cigar, Comfortably Numb (it has a really awesome guitar solo), Money, Wish You Were Here (beautiful song), Hey You, High Hopes etc... I'm a big Floyd fan, to me these would be pretty listener friendly. And I get what you mean by the wierd sounds, but they're a progressive/art rock band. It was all about experimentation then and to me Dark Side of the Moon is the greatest album ever made. Anyway just try these songs.

What I like about Gilmour I must admit is not that he is technically a super guitarrist, I like a lot his sound, and his musical talent more so than how he performs I dont think of him like a master guitarrist or something like that, but his sound and vibe really take my attention..... :)

Thanks for all the repies. I went on Itunes and realizes I've heard everyone of these songs. Young Lust is really cool as are the others. It's kinda of cool because it's kinda like hearing Jimi Hendix or Elvis for the first time. I'm about 30 years late but since there really isn't any good new good music these days I'll just go back in time for new old stuff.

Thanks,

The long tracks like "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and "Echoes" are quite wonderful! There's nothing wrong with some long jams.

Sorry, I know that this is overload for you.

I like the Animals and Wish You Were Here CD's along with Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall.

If I had to choose one CD...The Wall is a classic and you already know Another Brick in the Wall.

Hi:

The suggestions you have gotten so far are all quite good.

I'd also strongly recommend Gilmour's 4 solo albums. I believe that these records display elements of his playing that are different from, and often superior to, his work with The Floyd:

David Gilmour - Key tracks: 'There's no Way out of Here' & 'Cry from the Street'.

About Face - Key track: 'Murder' (this has some killer Strat work!)

On an Island - Overall, a beautiful album. Key track: 'Take a Breath'.

'Live in Gdansk' - Just released, this 22 track live recording is awesome, and features all of the songs from 'On an Island', and many Floyd classics.

Hope this helps;
Ed

Please don't misunderstand me. I think "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is exquisite. It's just that the original poster specifically said he wasn't looking for any long pieces. I'm a huge fan of them myself.

Bradley,
I'm 100% with you on the longwinded stoners making noise thing. I dont listen to floyd ever, but if their stuff gets radio play i enjoy it. From the tiny bit i've heard gilmours talents lie in what he doesnt play, and his use of quiet and loud. No doubt he's a tasteful guitarist. But for me, if you cant do it in under 4 minutes then i dont want to know. Even all my old favourites bore me now when they go over the 4 minute mark. I cant remember the last time i enjoyed a cream, hendrix or dire straits album. Their all in my top 5. I think i've developed guitarist ADHD, i need some Ritalin

I agree, he definitely comes from the "less is more" school. HIs tone is awesome, and his leads are tasty, as in tasteful. Everything is perfectly put together without being sterile, and he has the best bends in rock. "Comfortably Numb" is still in my top 3 guitar solos. It's so simple, but raunchy and perfect. He's actually the reason I always wanted to play Fender Strats, and this time frame for me was when they fell out of favor for BC Rich, Jackson, Kramer, etc.

I would add that he IS a technically good guitarist.
He doesn't play fast, but it's not about speed. It isn't a race.
His solos are so memorable, I can hum along with them.

This is his performance at the Fender 50th anniversary gig. Not a 13 minute song with a "few riffs and licks", but a straight forward emotional played very well with his strat.
