Well I finally broke down and decided to take it apart. By checking on the net it seems to be a reissue of a 67 strat. One thing that confuses me though is the serial # compared to the date stamped on neck & body.

Serial says 85-86. Here's some pics.

To put that as a 1998, it should be an A serial...

I imagine it's an issue regarding the Made in Japan vs. Crafted in Japan label.

I am going to write this just like it is in the book about Japan serialization on Fenders . For the first two years of Japanese production serial numbers consisted of a two letter prefix to indicate the year followed by 5 digits. In 1984 this code was changed to a single letter prefix and six digits. After 1997 some of the letters were regurgitated. These should not be confused with earlier models and the latter models should have "Crafted In Japan" on the headstock.

Blue Book of Electric Guitars by Zachary Fjestad theres a section in the back of the book on serial numbers. That info came from the ten Anniversary Edition. They are nice to have so I try to keep them up to date there is now a 11th that come out this year.

This page "hints" at the differences between Made in Japan and Crafted in Japan, though it is quite incomplete:

That's a real nice looking MIJ Strat, BTW, but you know that already, I'm sure!
