Hi
I was wondering, having played a Fender Stratocaster (based on David gilmours red one) with proper EMGs, whether to put Fender ones on a Guiatr i was thinking of buying.

The guitar is a Fender Stratocaster Olypic white Californian and thats all the info i could get

Definitely go for the pre-loaded EMG Gilmour set. I think that they are in the $300 range. Install is about 20 minutes.

If you played a strat with EMG pickups and liked it better than the pu's in your other strat, then go for it. I was unaware that fender made copies of EMG's active pu's???? My guess is that if they do, they may just be rebranded EMG's, but I don't know. My guess is that they would cost more just for having the Fender name on them....but again I don't know.

I will say that I have EMG's in both of my other guitars and I absolutely love them. You will find better balanced response from the tone and volume knobs, making it easy to dial in interesting tones. With passive pu's I rarely like anything but the knobs turned up all the way, because it seems to affect tone in a negative way to me. You also get very balanced string response, and get little to no magnetic dampening of the strings. The result is better string balance and sustain.

With that though, I currently have no intention to replace the pu's in my strat, but that could change. Regarding Gilmour, i have heard him say that he did not go to EMG for better tone, he went to them because of the low noise and their ability to be unaffected by the tons of lights they use on stage. He stated he did not know if they sounded "better" or not. The lights were giving him noise on stage and he simply wanted to eliminate that, and EMG's/active pickups will do that. I personally think that should be you main reason to go active, if noise from lights or other sources is giving you problems.

I like EMG's. I think if you are going to spend the money, spend it on the real deals. No offense to Fender, but sometimes you just have to.

Emg's are great, but I love passives, dimarzio all the way!

IMO I had EMGs in my strat once, sounded alright but too fake for me.

ALWAYS use the "real deal" you won't regret it. This holds true for everything in life.

Fender, did make pickups that were active for a few years. They used those in the Elite series guitars and basses, from about '83-'85. They needed a 9v battery that powered an onboard preamp which was in the body of the guitar. They were pretty good, as I used to own two of those guitars. They did'nt quite sound like an original designed Stratocaster, but then again they really did'nt sound like any other guitar period. They were much quieter than any stock single coil Stratocaster, I have to admit that.
Those are the only "EMG" type of pickups that I can recall that Fender ever made.
I was never interested in the Lace Sensor pickups, and never had a guitar with those in them, so I don't know if those would fall into the same category?
