I recently had my new strat setup by a tech and didn't want the tremolo so high, I wanted the tremolo flush with the body. he told me he added a spring in the tremolo cavity, for a total of four springs, adjusted some things and it played great. I noticed he spaced the springs in the tremolo cavity like this:

spring
empty
spring
spring
spring

more springs on the treble side. i though this was in error since everything I read said to leave the middle spot empty if you use four springs. he said three springs on the treble side was better for stability since alot of bending happens there. It plays great i was just wondering if the spring spacing matters at all? have others seen this?

As long as the plate is flush with the body I don't think it would matter. But something feels bad about uneven spacing. I understand the argument but I'm not convinced that it holds water.

yeah the tension is spread evenly at the "fulcrum" points of attachment so I don't think it will matter when the saddle is flush. I keep mine flush and use 5 springs.

I had mine set flush with the body when I bought it, and the tech only used 3 springs, I have not had any tuning problems at all. Of course maybe the locking tuners helped?

The most important thing here is something you said Quote; adjusted some things and it played great; End quote Dont worry about it if playing great. And since it is flush.

If the current configuration perterbs you, simply pop out the 'middle' spring and reinstall it in the currently empty slot.

Take a look at this picture of the eric johnson strat... it also has that spring placement but in reverse.. I guess its a common thing but I never needed 4 springs anyway so I can't tell whether it makes a difference or not :)
