What amp would be good for my Squier Stratocastor?? I like Marshalls but Fenders are cool too....Maybe around 200$ or less. Also I would like effects like reverb and chorus.

I have a Roland Mico Cube I bought for $120 to take along on short trips. It has multiple FX and other settings you find in higher priced amps and the sound is pretty good for such a small amp. It can also work of 6 AA batteries if thers no power source but comes with an AC adapter and handle. It`s worth looking into, you can also check out the Line 6, they offer a similar amp too.

I like the current crop of modeling amps. Like getting several amps in one. then may not sound exactly true to the amp they are modeling, but it does allow you to get different sounds. The smaller Gdecs are out there. Nice, but to get all the features you gotta spend more than $200, as is the case with a lot of them.

Really depends on the type music you;re playing. I have tried the Ibanez MIMX30 ($199), the Line6 spider (not the souond I was after); and the Roland Cube 30x ($245 most anywhaere). I didn't get a chance to try teh Peavey although the specs look good to me.

I am going to get the Roland next week. The Roland is a little more and has no onboard memory or drum box. But it sounds great with my guitar to my ears. I talked to a guy at Jam session and he has the Line 6. Says the memory is good and bad. You can save it, but to change it on the fly is a hassle. I like simple and the Roland is definitely that.

Second to that was the Ibanez. It also sounded good, but read the manual and looks a bit harder to learn. Try to play the ones you want. If they are modeling amps, get the manuals online and read up on the features too and see if you think they are a good fit for you.

Good luck and have fun.

Randy

I would save just a little more and get the Champ. You will never outgrow a champ- With your Strat set up right you will be able to get a real Derek and The Dominoes Vibe out of that set up.

Hi Buick, welcome to the Forum.

If this thread runs you will likely hear people telling you that nothing beats a real tube amp. And it's true. But at $200 you really are not in that market yet.

For your money 66musicmaster's suggestion of a modelling amp may be good - at least for now. The sounds are not spot on when you A/B them next to the real thing, but they really are not bad and will get your ears beginning to understand the differences between manufacturers and models.

One more suggestion. An alternative to a modelling amp would be one of the all-in-one effects and amp modelling units, like a Pod or any of the multitude of different floor-based units out there.

Something that people sometimes don't appreciate about those kinds of boxes is that it is usually a bit of a compromise piping them through a guitar amplifier, because you are layering a simulated amp/speaker sound on top of a real one. In fact, the best way to hear those types of units is through a decent hi-fi type amplifier and speakers. In other words, just plug it into your hi-fi (assuming you have the appropriate sockets on the back) - with the added benefit that you can play at humane volume levels in your home.

Ulitimately, of course you will want a real guitar amp. But the above could be a way to go in the meantime.

Cheers - C

Do you plan on playing out with it, or do you just want some great sounds for you to practice with, record perhaps, and maybe use later?

I'd get a line 6 spider. For what you need, lots of sound to play with. Or, a line 6 pod.

I love Fender, but I haven't seen any amp in that range that can compete with line 6 for all the sounds you get. Not the best sounds, or something I'd recommend for jams or gigs, but a great little practice amp for what you need.

Ah, well there you go: that Fender Champion 600 is significantly cheaper than I knew. A good option - but I'd still prefer to save for the Blues Junior!

Under $200, fender and marshall sounds, and tubes too

Fear not, you need a superchamp or vibrochamp xd. I've got the vibrochamp as well as some other very tasty amps. I play the vibrochamp more than the others though. Sounds are great, speaker could be better, and its a tube amp too. I wouldnt hesitate to buy it again if it got stolen.
It's slightly above your $200 limit but really is worth the extra $30-60.
Where i spent hours dialling in sounds on various POD's, Zooms and berhinger Vamps, this little amp is a breath of fresh air. I just plug in, turn the model select knob, add bass or treble and away i go.

They are serious amps too. The whole Layla album was recorded with Champs and here in NYC you can grab one of the old silverface ones dirt cheap.

I played one simular to this...it was the Roland 30X Micro amp. Good little practice amp.
