I am looking to buy a new american strat and wanted to know if you can raise notes with the trem arm because all i have is a squier strat and you cant.

Well you can raise notes probably half a step or so if you have your trem in a floating position. But if you want to raise notes higher than I wouldnt be looking at Fender stratocasters. You might want to look at other guitars like Ibanez or Jackson that have Floyd Rose type of tremolo systems

You can raise and lower notes on all Fender tremolos, just make sure that the bridge is "floating" and not "blocked" or "flush".
