Does the '62 american vintage stratocaster have a floating tremolo?
I really need to know as this will determine whether I buy it!

Please reply

Thanks

I assume you mean the American Vintage '62 Stratocaster which is this ->http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0100100805....from the specs it states- Bridge - American Vintage Synchronized Tremolo

To set it floating or all the way to the body is your own preference setting....hope that helps.

It's not what would typically be described as a 'floating' tremelo.

As the previous post stated, it is possible to set it so that you can go both ways.

+1.

If the trem is that important to you, it may not be the guitar for you. It is more about the 'vintage vibe' I reckon and the modern trems are normally more efficient and reliable. Although saying that, my '62 is the best strat I've owned for staying in tune.

How are the '69s by the way cwpainter? Significant improvement on the 57/62s? I like the stock p/ups but am wondering if I might need a little more oomph...

The reason im so concerned about the tremolo is that I just recently bought an american standard and the tremolo is not very good. It makes it hard to drop tune and its a challenge each time i want to change the strings and also makes it impossible to do pedal steel licks where the open strings have to stay in tune and one string is bent.

I need to know if I will have the same problems with the '62 as i do with my american standard.

And I also prefer the vintage strats

Put five springs on your strat and the problems you mentioned will be history.

It would kinda "anchor" the trem to the body like a hardtail but you can still do a dive....

I think it can work provided your neck is properly set-up and the saddles are at a right height for the strings

Eddie,

The '69's are a huge difference! They really make the guitar, in my opinion. I just got them in and I cannot put her down now. Fender's description could not be more accurate- sparkling highs and deep, deep lows with a scooped midrange. They are just a little bit hotter than the '57/'62's but still 'weak' enough to get that really sweet, natural overdrive that comes from driving the power amp section harder.

As you may know, I am a huge Trower fan and with these pickups, my roto-vibe and the JCM900 I can really nail those tones.

You should also look at the Custom Shop '54's. They are very similar but a little more relaxed with the high end. Great for the SRV sound.

cwpainter (what's your real name dude?, seems odd referring to you in this way!!)

Sounds interesting - the 54s might be better for me as I tend to prefer the cleaner Fender amp tone. Will investigate once my wife and wallet have recovered from my other purchases this year! I can't get rid of his dastardly GAS!
Thanks mate.

Eddie

Eddie- My name Is Chris Painter, nice to meet you.

I had a '57 reissue with the Custom '54s in it. I could not find a bad tone on that guitar.

If you are looking for a super-fat, crystal clean clean tone then I would definitely say to go with the '54s- they come stock in the Dick Dale Strat and you can't get much cleaner than that guy. Just steer clear of Texas Specials and Fat '50s.

Chris,

Good to meet you too and thanks for the advice on the p/ups. Reckon I might hang on until next year when my funds allow. More than happy with it as it is for the moment but it gives me something more to look forward to! Any other mods you've done that are worth thinking about? I have to say though, that 'out of the box' this 62 is easily the best and easiest strat to play I've come across. They sure are purty too!

Cheers,
Eddie

I totally agree. Fender really got it right with the '62.

Other than the pickups, I would not touch anything else on the guitar. You are only going to subtract from it's positive qualities.

It does seem to sound a lot better with 11 gauge strings though.
