I like Warmoth's page on fretboard extensions

Ah, good. Not seen that page before.

But we had a thread about the theoretical possibilities and drawbacks of 24 fret fingerboards on Strats a few months ago, didn't we? Particularly as regards the neck pickup. I presume Warmoth will supply a pickguard with no neck pickup position to accomodate that neck?

I don't know the guy, but I've heard sooooooooooooooooooooo many complain about him a a number of different forums.

You know first hand, for some length of time, that's he's trust-worthy and reputable then? I'd be very cautious since I've heard almost nothing but bad things about that guy.

Yes, I've heard bad stuff about him too, though I also have no personal experience to go on. On his website he has some rather strange things to say about finishing, and is bizarrely hostile to PRS on that subject: I have no idea why. Maybe some sort of behind the scenes personal antagonism being worked through...?

On the other hand, I can't remember hearing anything but good about Warmoth. That's where I'd be looking for non-standard guitar services...

I have bought many things/ and had custom work done from Ed Roman and never had a bad experience. This guy has been building guitars since the 60’s and used to work for Gibson at one time too… he give PRS a bad rap because they deserve it… they used to build one of the highest quality interments in the industry until 95..at which point they quit hand building and went automated. They changed their necks from 24 to 22 fret necks to try to appeal to some of the older crowd…the entire automated system saved PRS hundreds of dollars in production costs on each completed guitar…did the consumer see any of those savings…..NOOOOOOO. In fact the price of the interments went up! (im sure they had to pay for all the new equip….. I think a lot stems from the PRS custom ED makes in his shop….that probably caused some bad blood with PRS as well….

I doubt that Mr. Roman's operation is going to threaten PRS. I also doubt that PRS was ever producing "hand made" guitars in quantity. They used to make high end guitars exclusively, but in recent years they have been targeting lower price points. Inevitably, you get what you pay for. And I don't see what the number of frets has to do with age, either. I like frets. the more the better. ;)

I suppose a guy could get a pickguard which is missing the neck pickup hole without much trouble.

I remember a guy talking about a 29 fret neck that would have wiped out the neck AND middle pickup. Acess to all 29 frets would be an issue in a normal Strat body.
