Can anyone state what the purpose of the trem. spring is for? With the spring in or out I can't really tell the difference. Am I missing something? Thanks.

Do you mean the little spring that goes inside the threaded hole that the arm screws into, or the springs in the back of the guitar?

He has to mean the little whammy bar spring. How could you not know the diff with or without back springs. lol. The little spring is to put tension on the arm so you dont have to screw it in all the way. The tension keeps the arm in place where you leave it. Without it the arm just swings around.

Hey Strat-Brat! Not finding your trem springs do anything for you? Then chuck 'em out; save some weight! Howsabout your tuners - helping at all? No? Get rid of 'em! Bridge: slightly in the way? Dump it!

Sorry: I'm being facetious. But only in a friendly way.

I presume you are really talking about the little spring beneath the trem arm where it screws into its hole in the bridge? It ain't vital, and it is not original to the design of the Strat - but it does help a bit.

It creates what is technically known as an "interference fit" with that arm's thread. In other words, it pushes it very slightly out of true and so causes a tiny bit of friction, which should be just enough that by the amount you screw the arm in you can control whether it swings loose, or just about stays where you put it (which is what I like), or turns only stiffly in its mount.

But a lot of people lose that spring and it usually doesn't bother them too much.

Or was it another spring you had in mind?

Cheers - C

Thanks for the info. You got it right. It's the spring inside where the tremolo arm screws in. When not playing my guitar I followed the owners manual and put the silver tape piece over the hole to keep the spring from falling out.

That spring is a spacer for the whammy bar.
