Hi everyone, I have a '57 Reissue Strat that I bought new in '87. It's black with a maple neck, just like E.C.'s. The body is flawless exept for one small nick or chip or a wear spot on the body. It's really small, and if the guitar wasn't black you probably wouldn't notice. This is not from normal wear, and I'm wondering if I should attempt to repair it?
-Thanks so much, Brett

To repair or not to repair ...

You can do a small drop-in repair. Check out Google to find some info.

Do you know what kind of finish that guitar has? nitro or polyurethane?

Hi, thanks for the info, I'm pretty sure it's nitro, I remember reading the warning card on the case before opening it, the guitar had to be aclimated (is that right?) anyway, do you think a repair like this would hurt its value? Not that I would ever sell it, and this guitar is not an investment, guitars are meant to be played.

Hi Brett: here's one of Stew-Mac's Trade Secrets newsletters on how to do the "drop fill" repair you are likely talking about:

http://www.stewmac.com/tradesecrets/ts0 ... clk=141631

And here's another one on coloring the lacquer. This would be a whole lot easier with a black finish like yours:

http://www.stewmac.com/tradesecrets/ts0 ... &clk=64873

As always, ignore the adverts contained in those pages - unless the products are useful to you.

Or just take the guitar to a good tech who knows how to do the repair. Not too expensive.

Good luck - C

My personal opinion is to just leave it alone and play it.

If it's really small, it's not much character at all.

And thanks to Ceri for giving the appropriate key-word "drop fill" instead of "drop-in" that I said.

A drop of superglue. a quick sand smooth, and a little final-stage polishing compound and the character is gone!

Though I wasn't remotely intending it as a "correction". You'd need to spend all day correcting me on stuff if we got started on that kinda thing!

It was a useful "clarification." If a guy's gonna Google, he needs the right key-word upon which to search!

I'd leave it alone. Repairs often look worse than the original ding. Besides, battlescars are proud reminders of gigs played, beers swilled, and hearts broken.
