I have gotten my pickups out of adjustment on my 89 US Standard. What is the proper distance from the strings to get that "Quack" sound I love. Thanks :D

Push the string down at the first fret and set the bass side at 1/8 and the treble side at 3/32. Thats the fender specs for a Standard.

Perhaps you can find your manual here:

manuals.

Otherwise, trial error can't hurt anything. All things being equal, try having the pickups farther away from the strings than is suggested.

Welcome to the Forum.

I start with the Nickel Method. Fret the E string at the last fret stack 2 nickels placing them on top of the bass side pole piece. Adjust the pickup up or down so that the nickels fit snuggly between the pole piece and the string. Repeat that for all 3 pickups.
Fret the e string at the last fret and place 1 nickel on top of the treble side of the pickup. Adjust it up or down until it fits snuggly between the pole piece and the string.

Turn your amp down to about 2 on the clean channel. Turn the guitar up to ten. Using one pickup at a time strike the E and e strings with same amount of attack. Adjust each pickup so the volume level is equal for the E and e strings.

You can then adjust the pickups up or down to get the desired tone. Make sure you adjust both sides of the pickup the same or you will lose the balance.
Remember the closer the pickup is to the strings the more volume and distortion you will get. But you will get less sustain.

Ah-ha! I never knew the Nickel Method - thanks! Luckily, though I live in a galaxy far, far away I happen to have some nickels! I'll give that one a try some time...

Cheers - C

EDIT: Can't spell nickel. D'uh! (Apparently, nickle is some sort of programming language...?)

That sounds like a reasonable way to get in the ballpark, but to get maximum quack, you need tweak it a bit.
I essentially $@!& the middle pickup where the treble side is a tad closer and the bass side is a bit further away. This causes the magnetic vibrations of the strings to hit the pickup slightly out of phase from the ones hitting the bridge pickup causing more quack.
There is a bit of tradeoff for balance here, but you can usually find something you like.

Nickel method, that's great. Simple and easy to remember. Thank you. And that Bill Lawrence guy knows a thing or two, eh?

Love,
Todd

Yeah, Bill Lawrence does know a thing or two. That's probably why Fender uses his pickup designs.

No, I did not. He and his wife Becky consider me like family though.
