There is a 56 custom shop NOS Strat on ebay. It's got a flame top and flame neck. I cant find any info on how much they are new. I dont know if the cost more than a regular model that doesnt have the flame in the wood. Is this a special order and does anybody know what they go for new? The regular NOS 56's go for 2500 bucks new.

Hi Lucy: can you post a link to that Ebay page, please?

Somehow the words '56 and flame top seem like contradicting clauses to me. But I'm sure the Custom Shop know what they are doing...

Cheers - C

Hi again, Lucy. A cool guitar to be sure. Don't know about the pricing: a post on the Custom Shop Forum might find you more expert opinion on that. Though if one with ordinary timber goes for $2500 then it looks like a snip to me...

The pedant in me wants to point out that a flame maple cap, jumbo frets and rolled fingerboard edges don't belong on a '56 New Old Stock Strat. On the other hand, those things all make it prettier and likely play better. So what's not to like? Snap it up!

And then post pics with your Forum T on the T-shirt thread, why not?

Cheers - C

It's not uncommon for Fender and Gibson to make "Reissue" models with variations that never existed.

And I guess, on the whole, reissues aren't really accurate reproductions. Read the complaints on the Les Paul forums for some examples. Every couple of years, Gibson claims their "Historic" models are closer to the originals.

Indeed. Every time Gibson come out with a new Historic Les Paul I know I'm going to be reading Neville Martin going over it with a fine tooth comb and discovering endless minute inaccuracies. I think last time out they'd finally got the nibs on the fingerboard binding right, but the fret ends were finished at slightly the wrong angle - or some such.

Mind you, that's a little different than jumbo frets on a "1950s" guitar. Not that I mind, I'm just not quite sure why they then call it NOS...

I've seen '50's Strat "reissues" with 9.5 inch radius fretboards too.

The word "reissue" just means it's sort of got some vintage stylings ...
