I am considering buying my first ever real Fender Strat.......looking for some thoughts, advice or recommendations. I live in a regional town and my local guitar dealer does not have much in stock so I can't really go up to the store and try the different models out. I am thinking about:
1) the American standard and the AS HSS (how different is the sound?)
2) both the above compared to the American Deluxe (is the difference just the S1 switch or is the quality significantly better?)
3) or if I really blow my budget, the Jeff Beck Strat

I know this is hard for anyone to answer, but any personal thoughts, ideas, experiences or reflections about how these few models compare would be helpful to me. Unfortunately the website doesn't have model comparison functionality (hint! hint!). I am leaning toward the Jeff Beck but if the AS or AS HSS are comparable in quality and sound then maybe they are the way to go! I guess I am looking for versatility so that I can play anything from Metheny type jazz to Trower type rock.

Cheers.

Play a bunch of different guitars...the one that plays and feels the best is the one for you. You should play on an amp most simular to yours. Don't get too caught up on particular models. You'll know yours when you start playing. Let us know what you decided on.

I'd love to be able to play a bunch of different guitars...unfortunately that would mean a 350km or a 600km journey, plus major expense and hassle. The local dealer has one VG strat and I think one other decent strat in stock (plus a few much cheaper models), so you see my predicament!

I would recommend a HSS highway one stratocaster..... mostly because of versatility AND comfort with the jumbo frets :)

I agree on the HWY 1. If you are a rocker, definetly the HSS.

Okay, I am going to offer a differing opinion. I really think one's first Strat ought to be SSS. The beauty of the Strat is the single coils. I can get an amazing very overdriven Trower type tone that you just can't get with a humbucker. To be clear, I am not at all slamming HSS's. I would love to have one actually (in addition to my SSS, that is). I just think that if you really need the humbucker, than maybe you should be looking at a more proper double-humbucking guitar. Just an opinion...

I agree, the american standard SSS is what the strat is all about. I would choose it over the beck model for budget reasons...unless you are just in love with idea of a signature model.

I was just trying to give the guy a more rounded guitar config option. One that would let him deversify his sound and broaden his horizons. Personally I own a SSS, I agree with you; however, my first guitar had an HSS configuration and was good for rock/metal. I can get metal or what ever sound I want from my SSS HWY 1...but I also know how to fine tune my pedals and amp to achieve many different sounds.

Same here but with respect to the poster choices i would say the AmDlx HSS with the S-1 switch.....does wonders. Not to mention the ++ on the hardware(Schaller locking tuners) and the abalone dot inlays...

If i were you, I would look on ebay for an '87 or '88 strat. They are not too expensive and increasing in value very quick because they were all hand made and its post CBS. I have an '88 and it plays like a dream.

Hello Ozmart2008,

Firstly welcome to the forum,
American Standard is a great choice.
play many if you can.
I own a 2008 sunburst w/rosewood.

My #1 is a '62 hotrod, with it's
big fat neck, a real tone monster. 8)

Best of luck.

Cheers.

Give the 57 American Vintage strat a try, I think it is really an awesome strat.
