Does anyone have any experience with this unit? I have an old Electro-Harmonix LPB-1 power booster I modified to attach to my strap so I can boost the signal a little and I love it, but it is bulky and awkward. Does the Villex boost the signal in a similar manner? It looks simple to operate & easy to install, but I have not found any store or anyone who has a demo model installed to try. Please let me know if anyone has anything to share good or bad.

Thanks,

DJP

This one?
It looks good and simple aside from two things.
1, Can anything be boosted without active electronics? I'm not sure but i think 'no'. The TBX controls dont boost anything they just give a strangled tone in the middle possition and then shift the tone to bass or treble. I think this may be the same but i'm not sure.

2, It may not be as easy to install in a strat as they claim. The jack socket route on strats can sometimes be a bit small. I struggled to get a stereo jacksocket in mine, despite it only having one more pin. Not a big box of electrics. You may have to carve a bit more wood out of the route.

Not exactly. The EMG pots are variable, this is not.

Rather than altering the guitar, something like a Tube Screamer, or a RAT into the signal chain would offer the same kind of boost, with the option of more color and tonal variations.

You can sort of get a boost by using tone circuitry that causes a mid-range resonance. But you are right, it doesn't actually boost those frequencies, it works reducing the attenuation in the mid-range that the circuit causes throughout the freq response.

I'm wondering about the SPC as well, but looking into pedals too. Would you recommend the Pro Co RAT2 Distortion Pedal? I want a natural sounding boost, not something artificial sounding like a Boss Distortion.

The EMG PA2 is a straight booster preamp mounted on an audio standard mini toggle switch. perfect if you just want plain overdrive for your amp. It has a trim pot so you can preset boost up to 20 dB. It will work with passive pickups. This is a really nice, high quality system. I have one on my HM Strat, and it does work well. It uses a 9 volt.
