For me it would have to be

Pete Townsend

Eric Clapton

Buddy Guy

and I'm sure there are others, but these come to mind first.

after some additional thought

Jeff Beck

There are a lot of great strat players, guys who can really rock and make their strats scream like hell, but for me the real guitar heroes are those who can touch me emotionally with their playing. Needless to say that Mark Knopfler an David Gilmour are on top of my list

I am positive that my favorite guitar player/musician/person/influence/strat player is John Frusciante just for his tone, emotion, and himself.

...and of course, Derek O'Brien (Antone's house guitarist since the early 80s, excellent producer, and the greatest guitarist out of Austin you've never heard of...he's so great I can't find a web-based pic of him to post here!)

...and lastly, Terry Jordan & Matt Abney (co-guitarists of the Screamin' Armadillos)

...in the words of an unknown great man, "My wife said if I brought home one more guitar, she would leave me...I sure am gonna miss that gir!"[/b]

No one has mentioned Richard Thompson, Steve Winwood, Curtis Mayfield, Harvey Mandel or Eric Johnson yet, so I shall...

Rory Gallagher - Taste
Rory Gallagher - Rory Gallagher and his band
Rory Gallagher - Solo material.

He's just the best guitarist there was IMO. Technically brilliant, energetic, totally immersed in his music, no time for family or a life, just music. tragic but it showed in his music. Many of my heroes play strats, but Rory is numero uno.

Which is your favorite Rory period/album?

I like the "Photo Finish"/"Stage Struck" heavy power trio stuff the best.

I will quote Richie Blackmore from Deep Purple :

"Rory Gallagher was the ULTIMATE PERFORMER " - and he should know.. having been on the same bill with Gallagher on many, many occasions.

ps - Deuce is Rory's GREAT guitar album - the variety of guitar styles and the quality of the songs & playing are INCREDIBLE !!!!!!
