That one is a real beaut!! 8) Good picture!

I remember seeing an ad for one in Guitar Player magazine when they first came out, and just drooling over how beautiful it was. I couldn't afford it back then. Now, they're going like like $2k and up on ebay, IF you can find someone that wants to sell it....

Hi, I'm late to this topic but it's taken me a while to start searching the forums...I was going to start an "Anybody own an ultra?" thread but thought I should check first.

I have a '91 ultra...it looks exactly like the picture posted above. The sunburst over flamed maple was the most common finish on these guitars, and I think the finish was almost always a "-burst" of one kind or another so the dark edges would hide the join between the maple laminate and the alder body.

The images jackiechichi posted don't give as much information as I'd like, but a few of the details (as pointed out by others) do seem correct. The ebony fretboard, abalone markers and "ultra" neckplate look the same as mine, but it looks to me as if the guitar has the LSR nut and Fender locking tremolo (made from '93 onwards, I think) instead of the earlier Wilkinson roller nut. Do the strings run through the body, or do you clip them off at the bridge? I can't tell from the pic, but it does look like one of the later ones. The snap-in tremolo should have an allen key-like bit on it to unlock the saddles so you can slip the strings in.

The body...well...I can't think why it would be a solid colour over flame maple, and all ultras have the maple as far as I know (sometimes it was curly or quilted) -- that was what made them ultra!

The Hipshot tremsetter in the tremelo cavity looks the same as mine. I think the Strat Plus Deluxe also came with the Hipshot. In fact I think you may have a Strat Plus Deluxe body with an ultra neck, because I can't think why someone would purchase an ultra and then remove the dual red lace sensors in the bridge position (and the mini-toggle that allows you to split them). Also, the pickguards used were aged parchment or pearloid rather than white.

I think the standard case was dark grey "snakeskin" tolex with black lining, too (weighs a ton, that thing!), but maybe there were other variations.

Just about the only source of ultra information out there is http://www.xhefriguitars.com/page4.html
...this Xhefri guy appears to have done a lot of work with ultras, pluses and plus deluxe models over the years.

This is a collector who is bonkers about the Plus Series guitars. Anyone who has never visited his website should do themselves a favor.
