I've always wondered how many guitar techs pull valuable parts out of guitars, replace them with cheap stuff, and sell the parts or build new guitars with them? A lot of guitar players wouldn't know the difference if their pickups were replaced.

Guitar Centers offers a 72 hour return period for vintage. Not much time to get it to a luthier and have him take apart the guitar and verify the neck and electronics. I may pass this by. To much of a hassle and they're not going to sell if for what I would offer anyway so it may be a moot point now.

My 2 cents:

The guitar sounds like it was trashed and cannibalized. You will never, ever recover your investment, let alone turn a profit on it. It isn't a highly desirable era of Stratocasters to begin with. Remember, just because it's old doesn't make it better. Besides, with all the mileage on it, the neck probably swings like a pendulum on the body and I'm sure the frets would need to be replaced.

I know techs who come by old, trashed guitars which are clearly beyond any cost effective rehabilitation for either pennies or for free. They promptly harvest the good parts for sale and/or restorations. They will then replace these original parts with whatever functional stuff they keep lying around for situations exactly like this. They will not unload the guitar privately as regardless of whatever disclaimer(s) they make, their reputations would be riding on them and an eternity of implied warranty service. So, they unload these beaters to stores playing the personna of a naive, "I gave up playing 30 years ago" type where the store proceeds to have what they think, is a 'field day' on the 'chump'. The store thinks it is getting over but who really is? Yet, the store has the last laugh when they finally unload it. Oh, and naturally, with GC, the case is always extra.

For the kind of money they want to charge you for this beast, you should demand one in NOS condition.

I think I'll probably take the money I would have spent on this 72 and put it towards a custom shop strat. Cant go wrong with custom shop stuff.

Yes I agree with others that prices is steep for one that has been updated with the parts that you said and who no's about inside.

The guys at GC are opportunists, trying to catch someone napping.

Maybe you could win that guitar in a some contest, but remember that 2nd Prize might be two of them :)

I have to agree that there are way too many dishonest individuals removing the valuable parts like pickups, and then selling the "original" guitar.

GC doesn't give a fair price when they purchase vintage gear, yet always shoot for top dollar.

My two cents.

I have a 72 strat and really love it. Yes I had to re-do the frets, but for a guitar of that age, it seems to me if it has seen any playing at all, you would have to do that anyways. I lent it to a friend many years back that was in a well known band, and he had one pickup changed and the tuners replaced with locking tuners. Well it might have lost some value due to this, but it stays in tune, ALWAYS, no matter how much string bending or tremolo use.

And the tone is something to die for. I tried some new US strats, and it does not even come close. I have an 86 MIJ strat also, and I see a big difference just playing un plugged.

I would NEVER sell my 72 strat, period. Not for 3500, not for 4100. Mind you there may also be some emotional attachment :)

Note that I have not tried custom shops yet. To me the bottom line is whether you like the guitar, in comparison to others. You should definitely try it out, see if you like the feel, the look, and mostly the tone (especially unplugged). And if you do, negotiate...

Cheers,

Dan

Maybe.

If they discontinue models and replace them with new ones.

The economic problems might cause some decent sales, but with the MAP issues, you will have to call the big internet retailers to get better than advertised prices.

I saw a local shop pay a guy that desperately needed money $400.00 for a Custom Shop Master Built '62 Strat. A really, really great guitar, but what a rip off. Oh, and guess what? the guitar never made it to a sale rack but went home with one of the employees. Who'd a thunk it!

The guitar probably wont gain to much value over time, simply because it's not all original. But if you like the way it plays and the natural relic, which i actually really like, then you should get it.

Exactly. Don't buy it thinking that it would be a good investment.
Buy it to play and love.
