A Guitar Center near me has a vintage 72 Strat for sale. Price is 3,000 down from 4,100. I would call it a heavy relic similar to the custom shop heavy relics being offered. It is a 3 tone sunburst. It has been refretted, the pick grd is not original as well as a couple of the knobs and probably the pickup covers. I have to assume that the pickups and pots are original but that would be checked out if I buy it. I only get 72 hours to return it if I dont like what I see under the pick grd. My question is this. Is this a good deal? My initial impression was that it is. It plays very nicely. Looks like it's been heavily gigged. I actually like the natural relic job on it. I just done want to get hosed if and when I want to sell it down the line. I couldnt find to much info in regards to it's value online. Thanks for any help.

What color is it?

Check out prices at www.gbase.com and ebay. That's not too bad of a price.

The original pickups are important, since they sell for around $1000 by themselves!

It's the common 3 tone sunburst with Maple fretboard. Like I said it's a heavy relic like those offered by the custom shop with heavy belt buckle rash on the back and the wood showing where your forearm rests on the front etc. The fretboard is pretty clean though. No fingering marks.

3k is still a bit steep in my opinion, especially with non original parts and hella beat up (call it relic if you want). The big question is, what is it worth to YOU. If you are willing to part with the cash, then the guitar is worth it. If you aren't, then it's not.

You may be right. I've seen a pretty decent one go for about 3500. I doubt they'll take much less. They had it for 4100.00 to start. It cant be worth any less than 2500.00 though. I've seen some pretty beat up ones listed for 5k. The prices are all over the place. I'll wait till after Christmas and see if they'll take 2500 for it.

According to 2008 Vintage Guitar price guide,a 1972 Sunburst, 3 bolt Strat with all original parts including case, in Excellent condition would go for $3,700-$5,400. From what you have described, it falls far short of exc. condition. 3 bolt neck Strats in their day were not considered to be collectable guitars. It seems that just because it is 36 years old, it is considered a "vintage collectable".
The price seems a little steep once you consider how much it would cost you to bring it up to Excellent condition(refinish, replace non-stock parts etc.).
The big question is, How much are you willing to pay for it??????

I dont think I would refinish it. Seems like the more original the better even if it's got a beat up finish. It needs a couple of correct knobs and pickgrd. I'm not sure what that would cost. There was one listed on ebay that pretty mint and they wanted 10k for it. I dont think it sold. I'll wait till after the holidays. With the poor economy maybe I can drive the price down.

I own an original 72. I got it new. That price is steep for a 72 that's not original. Did you pull the neck for the date and did you check the pot codes? Take it back and tell em to take a hike.

Early 70's Strats ARE becoming collectible. Who would guess. The price drops steeply around 74 or 75 when quality became a real issue.

I bet GC only paid a grand or so for it. They are always really high on vintage gear.

If it were all original parts and no fret job had been done on it that would be a decent price.

However parts have been changed and a fret job has been done. My personal opinion is that the price is way too high.

Thanks for the input. Seems like GC's is out of thier minds. The orgianl price was 4100.00. Maybe I'll walk in with cash and offer them 2 grand. I doubt they'll take it but who knows. I'm probably better off with a vintage reissue custom shop 56 that I've had my eye on. I can get one for about 1900 on ebay. I wonder though what the 72's will be going for when they hit 40 years old. Might not be a bad investment if they jujmp in price in a couple of years.

Personally, I would want to know if the pickups and pots were original before I made an offer on it.

Only if it's original. I would only offer them $1500 tops for it.
Personally, even though I love my 72 and never had one problem with it in all the years I've owned it, I think some of the newer Strats are real, real nice. That much money for a beat up, re fretted, guitar without all it's original parts is way out of line.
3 Grand will almost get you into a real nice PRS or a Custom Shop Strat.
A Rory Gallagher Strat is around that price range. This guitar will never be an investment.

Bought a 79 a few months ago for $975 locally. You can always find 70's Strats on CL from time to time. Cut the value of Price Guide in half if the condition is not good especially if it's not 100% original.

It's difficult when buying used guitars to know if parts have been switched. I think some guitar sellers and traders practically make a career out of switching out parts, replacing them with cheap stuff, selling parts, and selling the guitar as a stock original.
