Right on! Congratulations. We're kindred spirits. I just picked up my practically new Hot Rod '57 Vintage Reissue in a trade. I definitely came out ahead. I love this guitar. Here's my new girl:

That strat is gorgeous as well. Like the tort and dark SB. Really goes well together.

Cheers,

Thanks much. These Vintage Reissues are just impeccable guitars, as you also know. I highly recommend them. They play like dreams and sound wonderful. The sustain I get from mine is incredible, and yet it's so light. I decided on the Hot Rod with the Dimarzio Tone Zone in the bridge and the two SCN pickups because I play a lot of modern rock and that fast-play neck was made for my hands. Congratulations, again. We made the right choice.

I love the vintage look. Probably because I lived in that time, and actually played the original strats.

This is my American Deluxe

I named her "Honey" ... well, my daughter did and I agreed ... LOL

I went for it because of the vintage look. Also, if you gig out a lot, my suggestion is to get an ATA case to protect the guitar and put the tweed up so it keeps it's great looks.

Your '57 RI looks absolutely great. Love her and she will reciprocate.

:)

The '57 and '62 Re-issues are two of the finest production guitars I've messed around with in quite a while. I mean that sincerely, and I own a real 1962 and a 1958. Good job Fender...that type of guitar is ALL you ever needed to do!

Ditto: What I like most on that guitar's body are the soft body contours and the deep offset waist relief. Is that finish nitro?

That neck is awesome. I've expressed some theories about it in the past. One, that I thought they borrowed it from the "Tribute Blackie.' It is also very much like my '89 Clapton, which is different from the present guitar. My recommendations on that neck is what pushed 'nikininja' into acquiring his. He was waffling between the "57R and the Hotrod.

Is that pickguard a swap-in. If so, Fender ought to take a hint and make it stock.?

Enjoy. Thanks for sharing

Doc

Interesting theory on the Hot Rod neck. I'll look more into it.

I picked up the guitar in a trade. The owner gave me the receipt proving that he purchased it from a local Guitar Center in 9/08. He said the pickguard came stock on the guitar. He owns six Strats so he might have done a swap. I don't know for sure. But I do like it.

'Specs' indicates white for the pickguard which is what I thought. If the seller did swap it out, he did you a favor. My original observation stands with respect to the production line but they likely will not do it because of the date of the guitar. '57 would not have had a laminated 'ts' pickguard.
There are some things they hold true to with respect to dates.

ok i got so many questions as ive been eying this strat for a while (yours is awesome btw!):

1) does the v neck help with playing the 6th string with your thumb
2) how is the nitro finish on the neck?
3) how is the nitro on the body? does the finish seem thick? is there a poly layer under it?
4) is the fretboard glossy?
5) is the 7.25 neck radius nice for chords, and hammer ons? like hendrix and frusciante?
6) oh and one more: are the fretboard edges smooth and rounded like in the 2008 MIA's or are they crisp?

thx in advance

1) does the v neck help with playing the 6th string with your thumb
Definitely, I have small hands and fairly short fingers and I can bar the top two strings with my thumb.

2) how is the nitro finish on the neck?
Not sure yet as I haven't played enough to wear it yet - if it is like my '62 it will need a periodical wipe down to keep it smooth and slick.

3) how is the nitro on the body? does the finish seem thick? is there a poly layer under it?
All the reissues are sealed with poly - not so sure on the thickness - fairly easily to scratch. Nice depth - look to it.

4) is the fretboard glossy? Yes - very much so.

5) is the 7.25 neck radius nice for chords, and hammer ons? like hendrix and frusciante? Definitely.

6) oh and one more: are the fretboard edges smooth and rounded like in the 2008 MIA's or are they crisp? They are not the same worn feeling you get from the MIA's, however, they are not sharpe either. Just feels wonderful - hoping to wear the edges naturally.

Cheers,

Shepp...
