Is there much of a difference between the single coils on the MIM Strats vs. the American Std. Strat??

Everybody seems to be upgrading pickups on both. More on MIM. So that tells you they are both ok but you will upgrade either one of them sooner or later. Tone and noise (regular single coils can hum a lot) properties are the main reason to upgrade. Hope that helps.

I know that stock pickups on the Standard Strat MIM are made with ceramic magnets. Most Strat folks seem to prefer Alnico magnets in their single coils, which come on the MIA Strat. All the old vintage Strats came with pups with Alnico magnets, which gives them their vintage tone.
It is a matter of preference, what sounds good to you.

MIM aren't bad. MIA's have a little better tone, less noise and handle overdrive a little better.

Depends on how picky your ears are and what you want to sound like.

+1 -- Concur. The MIM pickups are not as bright sounding as the MIA's Alinicos but they still have a nice warm balanced tone. I kept mine in for years before changing them out.
