If I have to go to a store, Guitar Center is the place. Other smaller music stores are a bit more expensive, guess cause they dont have as large a selection and arent as big as GC. But as far as catalog ordering, I like ZZ Sounds. They have a great selection and can split you payments into 4. Free shipping and they have a blowout section that just kills. You can usually find a great deal there, I've bought things I didnt need at that moment, but couldnt pass on the price.

GC doesn't have top-notch consultants but that's never been what it was made for. It's a chain, and has a big selection to look at, play and buy if you want.

For some obscure item, or highly skilled luthiers, or the most knowledgeable staff, GC might not be the place.

I could care less about the political reasons of why I shouldn't go to GC, or Walmart, or some other popular target of hippy stone throwing. For 90% of what I buy - strings, picks, straps, cords, small thing, an accessible place to go to test stuff out and jam, and window shop - GC is probably my favorite place.

I bought a guitar/amp package from MF once. It was a Epi LP100 and a Valve Jr amp. Closeout package was $245  . The guitar alone costs $280 and the amp $200. I scooped it up and sold them seperatly myself and made a quick $100.

Hi everyone, I have my dedicated guitar shop and sale guy. There is eight guitar stores here, seven of them are one shop owner and the last one is just a bigger version of them. I visit them occasionnally but I always buy only from one of them and from the same guy. Over the two years that I started my guitar journey, I built a trusty relationship with the manager and all the employees and it shows. I can go there any hour any day, grab guitars from the wall, try stuff and nobody will come to harass me. I'm big on that, I very much dislike beeing pushed in the corner for the deal of the century, I am not an impulsive buyer and they learned to respect that. On the other hand, If one day I want to try an expensive guitar or plug some gear together to make some noise, I'll catch my sale guy Martin and we'll do that. I am also lucky enough to find my luthier in the same shop. They are two separate legal entities but they share the same building and customers. They are Fender authorized dealers, they carry all the major brands, that's my place. So, over the years I learned that if you ask what time is it now at five or six people at the same time, it is very unlikely that you'll have the same answer from them all. The responses varying from a few seconds to a few minutes. So the more people you ask the time from, the more confused you are because nobody has the same answer, the one you need. Same thing with gear informations and people's advices. They are the experiences of other people and you have to make your own experience by trying things for yourself. It's no New Year's resolutions, I've been like that for a few years now, local, smaller, slower, focused. Sorry for the long post, this topic was bugging me somehow and I had to vent a little. (I'll have to talk to my shrink about that) :D

Claude.
