Well i do believe manny's has quite a bit of history behind it, don't you say? I mean like the guitar gods walked through there, and there is a sam ash nearby i believe. Gonna go to manhattan and hopefully make a visit :)

I make it a point to shop at my local music store, owner operator type places. I'm now to the point of disgust with guitar center that I just won't go there and I try to plan my purchases for the saturdays I can get to my local store (they close at 6pm and I never can make it after work), or if I need something they don't have in stock, they order it for me over the phone and usually have it in a few days. They are pros, practicing musicians as well and steve, the owner of this particular shop here in central arkansas is an avid collector, historian, guitar museum curator and all around great talented guy who's been in business for 27 yrs. I know I can count on him to shoot me straight knowing it's for the long term business not the quick sale to help his quota like the other place.

i go to gc to buy the guitars (well order them) because i usually can get a good deal there and i like the no intrest credit card deal they have often.

other than that, thats it, the customer servise can be good sometimes but most often its awfull. my last and will be last encounter with them was the other day, i brought one of my ibanez guitars in and i need some info on the bridge (the edge III) i like it but requires work, i changed strings (same guage) and the bridge was elevated no problem i went to adjust the screw on the claw thing but was not loosenig the slack on the strings,

so i go to gc and they are telling me its a $100 job and its a nightmare, i try tellin em noooo im just doin something stupid you cant even tell me what im doin wrong...."nope we wont do that here, nightmare of a job"
so i leave angry and drive way out of my way to firehouse music and it takes the guy 5 min to fix and show me what i was doing wrong... and oh yeah gc it was free

Cintioli's Music in Philly is awesome too. Bennie is the king of great deals. They even actually set the guitar up before you leave the store.
The local Sam Ash and GC don't do that here.

That's what my local shop here does too. When I got my powerhouse, they checked it but knowing I knew how to do my action, intonation and wanted to up to 10's on the strings, I just brought it back the next saturday, steve's guy bobby took it, filed the nut, tweaked the neck, make some spring adjustments on the trem and gave me some advice on the set up and why he did what he did....ALL included with my purchase. Smart consumers know to find the good shops. Most of the owner/operator shops know that is what works for them, so most ARE good trustworthy shops. I'm sure there are some good people at GC, but i hardly ever see the same person twice there.

If that is the case, Guitar Center. Just make sure that they do have installment plans. The last time I went they wanted me to apply for a credit card, and that is the LAST thing I need is another credit card used solely for guitar equipment. I'd end up with all sorts of crap and a payment at the end of the month that would make the national debt look small. Let us know how you did.

Thats what I thought GC did were credit cards I get offers sent to me from them for them. My local music shop will set people up with a installment pay plan.

I go to my local shop mostly. Every once in a while I stop by the local GC but they don't offer the service of the local shop.

American Musical Supply: 3 or 5 month payment plan (3 for less than $1000 and 5 for more) without having to open a credit account, free shipping, no tax, 45 day return policy with free return shipping, a free one year extended warranty, and great customer service. I have sent two guitars back simply because they werent on par with the ones i tested before ordering and there was never an issue. Only problem is they don't stock every fender, but if they have yours i'd recommend them.

I neglected to mention them earlier. I have done mail order with them in the past and usually recieve whatever it is that I get ,within the next day instead of the usual 3-4 day waiting period that you have to put up with from Musician's Friend which by the way,is owned by Guitar Center. AMS is probably the best mail order retailer out there today.

Thats another good thing, if you order before a certain time it gets shipped that day and they have distribution centers in nevada and jersey. When i lived in vegas i actually got something the same day i ordered.

I always go to Guitar Center. Mainly because they usually have what I want in stock. Most small music stores usually end up having to order what I want/need and it takes a few days to get it. One thing that I found out at our local GC (San Marcos, CA) is that they own all their stock so they cannot send defective stuff back to to the factory. I recently went through 3 Telecasters before I found the one that was just right. I had a problem with the nut being cut badly on the first one (the high E string was too close to the edge of the fretboard) and got another that had a problem with the output jack. When I took the second one back they had put out the first one with the bad nut out on the floor to sell. I asked the salesperson who took the guitar back why it was still for sale in the defective state and he stated "Well, we can't send it back to Fender because we own the guitar, and besides, some kid will probably buy it and not see anything wrong with it." He was probably right. My style of playing just kept taking the string off the fingerboard. As for the one with the bad output jack, he told me that one would be set out to a local shop to get the jack repaired. Anyway, I am generally very satisfied with GC. It's too bad they don't do setups on site though.
