As far as buying a guitar...I like talking to people and playing the instruments before buying. Also some guitar shops offer set-ups when you purchace from them. I know that you cannot get that from Mucisians friend. Mucisiansfriend.com has a lot of other good services as well. If I was not near a guitar store, I guess I would have to use mucisiansfriend.com or samash.com to purchace equipment. I would purchace pedals, strings, picks, and amps from them, especialy if I knew what they sounded like and they were cheaper than the local shops.

I wouldn't buy a guitar I haven't played and felt in my hands, ever. But that's just me.

I don't think GC is the ultimate place to go, but it's got a good selection and sometimes it has very good prices. I certainly don't want to buy a pack of strings at some mom and pop store for $8 when I but 3packs at GC for like $11 - same brand.

I also don't go to GC and expect professionals to answer any little question I have, but that's not what it is. I already know going in what I want. I just go there to test things out and get prices.

You do if they have offices or a warehouse in your state at least that is how it is in Maryland. If you buy from any business that has offices on branch locations within the state you are required to pay tax. Just because the same firm owns them all they are concider entities on there own. I buy from Eldery Instrument in Lansing MI. and I dont pay tax but if I lived in that state I would have to if they are like Maryland. I have to pay tax when buying from GC only because they have location in my state If you look you will see that people in Utah, Missouiri, Washington, Indiana they all have to pay taxes when buying from Musicians Freind.

The more I go to guitar center the more I become annoyed. The people there are either unhelpful or just trying to rush you through a quick sale. I sell cars and appreciate a good sales pitch but nobody seems to be able to do that. I don't mind going in there and being upsold on something that may be a bit better than what I was originally seeking. The problem is they never seem to be able to jusitfy why the more expensive product is better. Most recently I got upsold on a more expensive guitar case for my new acoustic. I let it happen but the sales guy was to lazy to even make sure it fit the guitar. So I got it home and promptly returned it the next day 4 minutes before they were closing.

If anyone thinks that the young, struggling guitar players working at Guitar Center are outstanding salespeople or highly-trained technical consultants, you're kidding yourself.

They're working there to be around guitars, get discounts, and make a little money for themselves in a big guitar store, as opposed to flipping burgers.
